Hello all... Being that we restore mainly Mustangs here at our shop, dosn't mean we got all the answers. So I was asked to reasearch the correct colors for undersideof the hood and deck lid of a 67 Shelby GT500 that's being restored to concours quality. I have found ina MCA Thread judging rules for the 67 Shelby GT500 and the underside of the hood ..by their rules.. can be accepted either way.. body color or the satin black. As for the underside of the deck lid... couldn't find anything. Dosn't help when I found a website that has restored concours quailty Mustangs and it shows the underside of the deck lid both ways.... body color and satin black. So wich is correct... by MCA Judging standards? Also for future reference what kind of line is to be used from the Ralley Gauge Pac Oil Pressure gauge to the sending unit, copper , Plastic or Aluminum? Thanks ahead of time
You are not reading the rules properly. The metal underlined hooks and decks are painted body color (early model) The fiberglass hoods/lids are blacked out with an aura of body color around the perimeter.
I should have been more specific. For the later cars the trunk would be black underneath. The early cars with the extra reinforcement woul be body color. He did not state what # car he is working on. On the all original car I had yrs.ago I do not remember any or very little color on the edges of the trunk lid.It had never been painted or touched up.Still had the special canada decal . Hope this helps.
Thanks for the responses The Shelby came here with a Fiberglass hood and deck lid can't confirm if they are the orginals tho. It was purchased by the owner repainted , and appeared to be body color on the underside of both. whiteykr The secretary dosn't come in on Saturdays, I will get the # of the car next week. I'm their parts guy, so the questions you may have, I have to ask the shop foreman or the owner next week. Thanks again
Heres the link to the car we are working on and have the questions on. http://www.vailsclassics.com/2010/06/67-shelby-complete-concourse-restoration/
could be wrong but( from what i can see of the fiberglass )looks like a late production car to me.of course the glass could have been replaced...Trent
Is this an air conditioning car? The hood would indicate so if original. Of course the VIN will tell all...
Hi, So nice to see another car going back together. The photos are a good collection and helps document what was done to the car.The comments about painting the underside of the hood/trunk are based on what we have seen over the years.Common sense also tells us that the steel framed type would need paint to prevent rust. The rules are often revised as we learn more. The 67 is a year by itself, and many of these details were done as production was streamlined to make it simpler/quicker/cheaper to complete the car. Many of the all fiberglass type were left raw and have no paint on the underneath, just the natural glass. What did you see prior to paint prep? Thanks for the pics! P.D.

The bottom side of a 67 all fiberglass hood or trunklid should be ether bare unpainted fiberglass with body color overspray or satin/semigloss black with body color overspray . This would be accepted by any SAAC,MCA or Team Shelby knowledgable concours judge. Bob
+1 Bob The original I had was unpainted black fiberglass on underside of trunklid.car was 1500 cars earlier than this one.
whiteykr, Bob Gaines, rsimkins, 557, patty.dilabio Thank You all for your input!! We appreciate what info you provided to us... Looks like we'll have to do some changes to get it correct. Go to our website for updates on the build of the Shelby, don't know if they up yet, but we just set the motor in today and shot of few pics of it. We are working on getting this one and a 66 Mustang Convertible done. Thanks Again
Please take this observation in the constructive positive way it is intended . I think you need to pause and decide what your expectations are. If you are attempting a "REAL" concours restoration to MCA (since you mentioned that venue) trailered concours standards you need to get someone qualified to inspect the car and advise you. The information will also be applicable to other restorations you no doubt do. From the pictures I see a multitude of detailing flaws. Some are worse then others. You no doubt have good workmanship skills but the detailing is lacking for a high scoring MCA trailered concours restoration . It would be next to impossible to do something like a evaluation correctly through inspection by photos and text. Just my opinion .
