I know of many changes made to this component during the assembly run, however I was interested in seeing how many original pods are still on the cars and if anyone has photos they could share of their cars. The trimming of the sides to fit the 65 dash VS 66 dash are common differences. My early car has a wider pod at the speaker grill. The replacement pods I have purchased and that being NOS along with repos differ some. I would like to know if any of you have run into this problem.

I used a repo on 5S275 for many years until I found an original
including an oil pressure gauge. Sold the original gauge to another
65 owner. The major difference between the two pods are the
wideness of the lower end. The repo is quite a bit wider which
means that the screw towards the passenger side had to be moved
towards the middle of the car. Results an extra hole in the dash pad.

Thanks for replying.. Do you know what number car your original Pod came from to replace your repo on #275.. I didn't see a difference in the lower part other than 66's need trimming to clear the drop offs on the dash pad. I'll need to put together more photos of what I have to show some differences I found in mine.. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge..

Sorry, but I don't know which car it came off. The seller said that
he had had the tach as well but sold it separately. The pod I have now
is fiber glass and quite smooth, i.e. not so much textured. The repo
I had had more texture and was the type I had to cut the holes for
the gauges. Looks like the one on your picture. A previous owner to my car
still have the what he believes is the original pod and it's made of ABS plastic and completely destroyed, i.e. warped and pieeces missing. The sun did that
    to it.

    Hi,
The ones marked top side, bottom and front look exactly like the one I bought including the oil pressure gauge and the dirt inside the glass also the left upper corner where a little piece is missing matches mine. Were you the one selling it to me on Ebay or somebody else gave you the three pictures?

I've had the photos for a long time... I own the pod shown last.. and a few more that are not pictured...I think that first pod was sold on ebay...I know the third one is a reproduction showing a white label laid in the glass( Valley Ford Parts )... Neither one of these are for a early car.. The outline of my original pod is much wider and completely different from reproductions...Many photos don't show the top side very well in vintage photos...Using the outline where my pod was mounted gives me the dimensions before it was distorted and cracked.I guess from age and the sun... I know there were changes made during the 65 model year but I don't know what cars received the different versions..I am probably going to restore my old pod.. Just would like to see an original in the original shape.

I have outlined the shape difference in this pod to resemble the non tapered sides of the top of an original in this photo

    Steve,

The biggest problem with finding an early original may be the fact that the earlier ones may have been plastic, and there may have been a problem with warpage.

I don't know this for sure, but it was a big problem on my car. I have original warranty papers showing replacement of mine when the car has at the original dealership with no miles on 11/8/65. It was replaced again on 3/26/66 when the car only had 1500 miles.

The second time, it probably received the pod that it currently has. It is fiberglass, kind of rough on the top, and smooth on the face and bottom.

I don't have any good pictures right now. I'll try to get some.

    Thanks Brant
I know the original isn't plastic..but it was thin and many warped early on as you said!! I have the old one but many pieces were broken from the edges and the original shape is outlined on my dash... just thought if anyone has a vintage photo showing the top as new would be great.. You are probably right that there are not any left original because they were kinda crapy.. but early cars had a lot of stuff different and made up on a whim to get the production thing going..

Any photo you can share would be much appreciated!!

Dunno if it'll help, but the "Snake on a Plane" is billed as completely original.

It looks like 5S520 was equipped with a SW oil pressure gauge
instead of the CS. Have seen several cars late in the 65 production
with this gauge. Probably a supply problem.
