I have a dear friend restoring a 1967 GT500 nearly from scratch and I am looking to find a set of original 1967 GT500 license plates for the car for a Xmas present for him.. Can anyone steer me in the right direction on how/where I might find something like this.

    Thanks,

Your friend is lucky. That’s a great idea!

The Shelby cars got regular license plates like all other cars of the period. There’s no way to tell a Shelby plate from any other plate. The thing to do is to simply find a set of original 1967 California passenger car license plates. Obviously the nicer they look the better. I recently found a set of never-been-used 1966 Texas plates for my car, so there are nice plates around. Of course the really nice ones aren’t cheap.

Plates like this are for sale on ebay and various internet sites all the time. I suggest you do an internet search for 1967 California License Plates. Do the same thing on ebay. Be sure you confirm the plates are original and not reproduction. Also, be sure they are for a passenger car – not a truck or trailer. I don’t know about California, but in Texas there’s a difference.

Maybe someone who actually lives in California can to add to this advice. (Are you still following this thread, Jay?)

If you have any doubts, have your friend help you pick the plates for his car. It will take the surprise out of the gift, but it will guarantee he will be happy with the choice.

    Good luck,
    Steve

    Shadowgraph,
As Steve said there are many California plates available on ebay and that is a good place to check. I used to also see them for sale in Antique stores, but have to admit I have not checked in awhile. Will your friend be planning on using them for driving or just for show? If he will use them for registration through the Year of Manufacture (YOM) program, you need to make sure they are "clear" with the DMV, ie the number is not already in use or the DMV will not allow you to use them. To check the numbers you can go to the DMV website and enter the numbers to see if they are OK. On a final note, I have heard that for the YOM, the DMV also wants the correct number sequence for the year of the car. For '67 I think that would be Uxx xxx or Vxx xxx, but am not positive of this requirement or the sequence required if it is a requirement. I agree with Steve this is a great idea and I may have leave a copy of your original post laying around for my wife to see.

another thing to consider is where his car fell in 67 production i.e. early or late...my car is early #557 in production was originally sold in march of 67 and the original plates prefix is UJD ....good luck and happy hunting!!!!Trent
