What is the process to repaint 67 hipo valve covers? Need to know how to reomove the black wrinkle paint and what steps are needed to reapply the paint. Where do you get the paint and what is it called? Thanks Randy
It's called "Wrinkle" paint. Remove the old paint by stripping or shell blasting. Prep for paint. Shoot the wrinkle paint on a warm day, or, the wrinkling won't develope. Sand off the paint on the letters and high points. If you work with increasingly finer sand paper, all the way to ultra, the letters and high pints will start to look like chrome. Really nice. Clear coat if you wish to, or, wait untill the paint gets a little weathered, then clear coat. It brings the color back.
So, what is a good brand of wrinkle paint to look for? Do you use a chemical type stripper, brush on? Do you apply it directly to the bare aluminum? Randy
The brand I used was VHT, but, Summit probably has some kind also, or the Eastwood company. Chemical strippers: well, you need to make sure it won't be too harsh on aluminum. This is why I mentioned shell blasting. Use crushed walnut shells instead of sand. Eastwood probaby has that too. Oh, and while you're at it. Get the correct bolts for a 289 Hi-Po from AMK, or a Mustang parts supplier that handles his stuff.
