I have always thought the inner part of the side scoops for the '66s were painted black, but I have been seeing many pictures recently of 66 GT350s that have the car part of the inner scoop area painted the body color. I have seen many vintage pics of the carryovers and they are black inside the scoops, but have not been able to find any vintage pics of later '66s that show what color the inner area was on those. Does anyone have any vintage shots of later '66s (post carryover) that show inner the side scoop area color?
    Thanks,
    Jay

The recent pictures you looked at were of cars restored incorrectly. The 66,67 and 68 had the inside of the scoop painted black . It wasn't just a 66 thing. Bob

Yeah, I learned from a shop near here that SA used a mask to paint inside the scoops, which is why they made their own masks to avoid tell-tale paint edges left by taping.

Heck Bob, I thought you were just referring to the carryovers ;)

    2+2,
Do you have any more info on the mask and how the shop knew SA used one?

No, I don't know where they got the info. The mask I saw was a sturdy construction of thin cardboard. I've done such things myself, to paint things like wheelcovers, which look really lame when they have taped edges.

Thanks, That is what I figured they had done on the cars they painted. However, I also wondered if as a cost cutting move, SA decided not to paint the inside sometime during the '66 year.

The black out disguised the relatively small duct (later 67 and 68 there was no duct) and everything else inside the scoop for a cleaner look IMHO. You have to be careful if you do this with the scoops on and seal the edges of the scoop since they don't always seal to the body well and you may have a blow out  . I would suggest to mask all around the sides of the scoop to be on the safe side. Bob

Is there a semi-correct rattle can finish? Similar to underhood black?

I have always used the Krylon brand 1613 semigloss black or equivalent. It drys quick and covers well. The underhood black would probably work just as well. Just be careful of the blow outs as I mentioned. I hope this helps. Bob
