I've got a question regarding the correct C4 Shift display on the selector panel. I've read that the correct position for the T bar selector for Drive 1 is the bold green dot which is the second selector location from the bottom. In this position it would run through he gears as 1, 2, 3. The Drive 2 postion is the one just after the neutral position. My GT350H is fitted with the C4. The drive 1 position runs in 2nd gear only but what is suposed to be the drive 2 postion in mine runs through the gears as 1, 2 , 3. So when I select the 1st postion after neutral it runs just like an FMX 1-3. Wen I select the 2 postion after neutral it starts and runs in second gear. Do I have the wrong selector panel or is there something else that's not right.
The GT350H had the same shift pattern as any other 66 Mustang. The pattern P R N • O L The • position uses only 2nd and 3rd, for reducing wheelspin in rain or snow. The O position is normal drive. Sounds like your transmission is not original.
You may have a point. I also have a 66 Factory GT with the same shift pattern and operation. The GT350H does appear to have the correct C servo on it.
Back in the (not so) good old days, one of the first things that was done to any car with a early (65-66) C4 was swapping the valve body out for one from a 1967 or newer C4. These were "Select Shift" valve bodies and gave better control over transmission shifting. With this valve body, the first forward position was drive, all the way down was 1st, it would stay in that gear until you moved the lever up, then it would stay in 2nd. A B&M or TransGo shift kit would make for crisp, firm shifts and the car was a lot more fun to drive. (I did this to at least 6, none of which were HiPo transmissions) Unfortunately this was done to a LOT of C4's and the original valve body was usually tossed without thought that maybe it would be a good idea to keep the original parts with the car. A few guys I know had the sense to keep every part that came off of their cars. I know one guy who told me the only thing he ever took off of his car that he threw away was in liquid state! (as in oil or anti-freeze). He still has every spark plug, hose, belt and point set! The C4 is an absolutely great transmission.
Thanks very much for that insight Bill. It explains a great deal now. So that fact that the C servo is clearly present on the transmission woudl suggest that basically it's the internals that have been altered for waht is considered to be an improvement? I guess I would sumize that my 66 GT also suffered the same fate. If I could find a c4 from a 65-66 parts car would the valve body be the same that I could put back into my GT350 if I so desired?
I know that the valve bodies from the HiPo transmissions were different but I don't know what the difference is. A pre 66 valve body shouldn't be too hard to find and should go right in. (I would see if I could still get a shift kit for it) You might check the HiPo Mustang Exchange, http://www.hipomustang.com
Check these out. http://www.hipomustang.com/hpmx/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9873&SearchTerms=C4,valve,body http://www.fordsmallblock.com/PDF/289-HiPo-C4.pdf CSX2580 is my barn find.
The correct valve body had different spring and orifice calabrations over a stock 64 to 66 , but you can use a 64 to 66 but would install shift kit, the most criticle difference is the hi po govonor which was calibrated for 6000 rpm shifts, stock govonors shift at about 4400 in drive.
