Does anyone know if the typical aftermarket Shelby 10-spokes have a beveled lugnut, or a flat bottom one that uses a washer? The guy at the tire store thinks mine are wrong, they are beveled, long nut types. Thanks for any info.
What are typical? They have been making these for forty years and there are at least six different styles? You need to give us more information or a photo of what you have...
All of the reproduction 10 spokes and the 10 spokes that were reissued in the late 70's early 80's by Shelby Wheel use the flat shank with washer. Its very easy to tell. If the seat is tapered then use the tapered lug nut. If flat use the washered one.
OK thanks. I did see the webpage on 10-spoke by coralsnake, but it doesn't mention a tapered lugnut like I have. The seat on the wheel where the lugnut seats looks like it has a taper, but it is not deep or very wide and could be just the lugnuts cutting into the aluminum over time I guess. But if the 10-spokes came as tapered seats with tapered lugnuts, I guess that is what I have. These are old too, maybe I should just replace them to be safe. Thanks again.
This is the lug nut I have, according to Branda's description of the part, this is the "correct" type. Branda has no lug nuts with washers for the '68 10 spokes.
I bought a set of 10 spokes sold by Branda in the early 80's. Here's a picture of the lug nut and the hole. I don't believe Branda sells the flat shank and washer lug nuts for the reproduction wheels, Branda only sells lug nuts for the original 10 spokes. You can buy them from the auto parts made buy Dorman 2.49ea. Kenny
Sure, here it is. The tapered lug nut goes about 1/2 way down into the taper on the hole of the wheel.
I wish I had it in front of me as the picture is tricky but that looks like type that uses the tapered lug. For the record there is no 68 style 10 spoke as 68s really never had this wheel. There was a change of adding a 1/8" (circa late 67) cast in place spacer to clear the 68 style calipers but the version of this also used tapered lugs
I agree it looks like it has the taper to me, also it doesn't have the machined surface for the washer.
Thanks for the info. I guess that would explain why Branda only sells a tapered lug nut for '68 10-spokes he calls "correct" style.
If you do use the flat ones with the washer be sure to tighten them to about 100 ft/lbs to get them to seat all the way. 80 ft/lbs is not enough.
