My Mustang is not a Shelby (darn) It's a 65 convertible, 289 2bbl, 4 spd. My interest is the handful of 66 convertibles that were made for Shelby's friends. What is the best full source of information about them?
The best source is the SAAC registry where the description of the cars and what went into them is described. Looks like a normal 1966 with rear brake scoops, Pony interior, rollbar, 66 Tach, stripes, 10 spoke wheels, and not much else different.
I agree that the SAAC registry is a great source for information on the 1966 Shelby convertibles. An additional source is Tom Corcoran's book "Shelby Mustang" as it has detailed picture of one of the original 1966 convertibles (the red one). There were only four (4) original 1966 Shelby convertibles built. SFM6S2375 to SFM6S2378. Each of the original four was a different color; green, blue, yellow, and red. the red one was the only four speed car. The others were automatics. Once upon a time, there were six (6) reported to have been built including a pink one "Shelby gave to his secretary" and a white one reported in the 1980's as "found crushed flat" in a salvage yard. These two additional two (2) never existed. These originals did not have pony interior .... they had all the 1966 Shelby modifications, however the side scoops did not function as the convertible top interfered. The originals also had air conditioning, real wood steering wheels, and 10 spokes. In the 1980's it is said that Mr. Shelby wanted a 1966 Shelby convertible and that want drove the construction of 12 more 1966 Shelby Mustang convertibles. These 12 are referred to as "Continuation Convertibles" and were built on 1965 and 1966 Mustang unibodies. The Continuation Convertibles had pony interior as an option and upgraded stereos. Four of the twelve went to Mr. Shelby ... one for him and one for each of his children. Eight to be sold by the constructor "Beverly Hills Mustang". In the 1990's there was a second attempt to build 1966 Shelby Mustang converibles which fell through. A red prototype? was built and Mr. Shelby was photgraphed with it ... but it was never assigned a Shelby VIN. I believe this red prototype? wore a Shelby VIN tag stamped SFM6S2393 for a while .... If you can't tell I am a real enthusiast when it comes to the 1966 Convertibles. I often think about the two 1966 Shelby VINs (SFM6S2379 and SFM6S2380) never assigned due to the one time belief that the "pink" and "white" original cars existed. I wonder if Mr. Shelby / Shelby American would ever build me one of these cars or sell me the privelege to build one of them .... one can dream. Hope this helps.
Good info Engineer. There is additional info and pictures of some of these cars in other threads here at Shelby Forums. Just search for 66 GT350 Convertible. RS
