Firetruck, my local dealer told me the stripes would cost $1000. Sounds like your dealer is even more of a rip-off.
Call these guys up, in San Antonio. They can fix you up with the correct stripes. I'd recommend you go with the flx paint stripes. They are actually painted stripes over vinyl. The original stripes were made by oracal, but the flx paint stripes wear much better. They'll explain the differences to you between the oracal stripes or the flx paint stripes when you call - and the prices are much better than the prices from Shelby or FOMOCO. http://www.auto-morphosis.com/
All, I’m hoping my stripe sage is over. My original posting was on 10-30-09. After my attorney sent Shelby a letter I was contacted by one of the companies that originally did most of the stripes, and the owner assured me they would take care of me. Fortunately their shop is by my work. Each time I had my car re-striped (3 times before this last one) there was something wrong, on top of the corrosion/staining issue. The owner of the company looked at my car and noted, like some of you, some body shops do terrible work, as he pointed out a couple of flaws like the top stripes being on backwards and the front being on upside down. I asked about painting it, and Shelby refuses to paint the stripes, as then it’s not a “Shelby”. They’d rather spend the money for those of you still covered under warranty to fix them. Painting is not an option Shelby will cover, at least yet. The owner gave me the run down on what the issues on the stripes were. I finally felt like someone explained it in terms I could understand, instead of the dealer and body shop who were very ignorant to what was really going on an just trying to placate me. In a nutshell, the stripe issue is due to environmental issues. For those of us who drive our cars (I drive mine almost 100 miles per day) dust and particles get on your car, your car gets wet and activates the dust and particles, and starts corroding the stripes. Once it starts, there’s no reversing the process. He told me silver and red were the worst stripes for this to happen with. He indicated no one has developed a stripe yet that will hold up to the elements, but they are working on it. They are working on coating them with polyurethane, but it is still being tested. Too bad Shelby didn’t do a little more homework on this before ruining their cars by putting these stripes on. Or, maybe Shelby was just anticipating no one would drive the cars and keep them covered in their garage, which is the only way to ensure the stripes stay good. The owner of the shop indicated the black stripes appear to be holding up to the elements. I did some research on this and it appeared to be true. I wasn’t sure how black on black would look (even though they make an aftermarket kit called a black out kit), but I decided to do it. I’d had enough with the silver ones. There were some issues with my car with re-striping it, including having to fix damage made by taking off the stripes on the prior re-stripings from the body shop. Apparently Shelby doesn’t pay too much attention to the body shops or stripers, and doesn’t realize they are doing more harm than good in some instances. That said, the owner took good care of me and got my car as right as he could (he had it for 4 weeks). Overall I’m pleased with the work done, but I still feel there is going to be a future stripe issue after all I’ve gone through. So, now I’m parking my car in the garage at night, consistently dusting it off, and covering it at work, which was what I was told was the best way to try and keep the stripes from having the same issues. Seems like a lot of work for a car I drive everyday just because Shelby screwed this up so bad. I’m thinking about getting rid of it now because this is too much effort for a car that should never of had this problem. Maybe I’ll buy the Camaro or the Challenger since they don’t have these issues. Shelby knows this issue has affected just about everyone who drives their car, but refuses to fix the problem once and for all. They’d rather wait until someone like me has to get an attorney involved. Very sad for us that relied on Sheby's reputation and were looking forward to owning a piece of thier history, since they don't seem to care about fixing the issue. Good luck to all of you!
This is ridiculous. I just bought an 07 and my stripes are starting to get spotted also. I had the same problem with the stripes on my 1976 Mustang Cobra II. You mean to tell me after 31 years they can't find tape stripes that last more than a year. That problem with my Cobra II along with a laundry list of other problems was the reason I had not bought another Ford in all those years. I hope the curse isn't back after 31 years.
I have read this posting for quite some time and wanted to relate what I've done to protect the silver stripes on my 07 SGT. I have a 3M clear bra installed on another Mustang and the installer told me to apply a plastic cleaner, protectant and polish to the clear bra every two months. The product, named "Plexus", comes in a spray can, is anti-static and is easily applied. I reasoned that this product might also protect my SGT stripes. I have used Plexus on the stripes twice, and have noticed a marked improvement in the way the stripes look. With the Plexus applied, the stripes are shiny, smooth, and do not water spot. My stripes were in decent condition when I bought the car, so I'm just trying to keep them in good shape. Also, the car is garaged. Plexus is manufactured for B.T.I Chemical Co, 638 Lindero Canyon Rd #371, Oak Park, CA 91337, and costs $12.95. I hope this product helps those of you with "problem" stripes. Russ
I have a 08 Shelby GT Conv. Vista Blue #0295. My issue is on the trunk deck lid. Spots and dicoloration. I will start the hashing with my dealership next week. I've got 12k on it and I bought it 3 months ago.
