Hi, I am helping my boss/friend restore his 1970 Shelby GT500. We have stripped the entire vehicle and its at the shop locally in So. Cal. We are looking for information on undercarriage and suspension markings as welll as the sheen of black paint used. What sheen in black was applied from factory? We are steering towards powder coating the suspension parts in "satin" black and having the under carriage and engine bay in sprayed in satin black as well. What are people's take on the powder coating of suspension parts? The reason why he wants to go with powder coating is for longevity of the parts from rust and for ease of detailing. We will be posting pictures and documenting the progress on this thread on here. Stay tune.
To the best of my knowledge 69/70 shelbys were not sprayed black underneath. Suspension parts were a variety of colors and natural bare steel. Are you trying to replicate the way the factory did the car it just do it the way you like? The later will most likely negatively effect the sale price down the road.
Just curious what shop in so. cal.?I am eventually going to need one for my 67 gt500 and am starting to do research...I am in Pasadena...Thanks,Trent
You should start by joining a Shelby club and getting some references from club members, not some other new person posting on the forum. You need a specialist to help you, not just any body shop if you are going to protect your investment.
Any pictures or diagrams to help follow specs. So for bare steel do people clear coat it after cleaning it off? This car will be a driver in So. Cal. I will let you know the shop he's picked out. I will ask him.
I am not trying to be rude, but these are questions that should be researched well in advance of the teardown. There are a lot of variables and now you want everything all at once...People have literally spent decades researching these questions. As for the undercarrige it depends on when the car was built. Has all this detail information already been cleaned off?
