Did the 66 Shelby Mustangs have clear glass or tinted glass (the factory green tint)??? Need to order glass (winshield, back glass, sides and wing vents) and need to be sure. The glass that came out of the car seems to have a tint to it. Thanks to all.......

    Re: Shelby Glass

its more than just glass. It is car-lite glass and was used in all Ford lines. I cant speak for early Shelbys, but the windshield I needed for a 68 Shelby was stamped car-lite and came with the correct purple tint. The other windows on a 68 also have a tint. I would look for used tinted glass because of the markings and dates. The windshield should be available but request car-lite.jmo CBN

All 65 /66 GT350 fastbacks had clear windshields. All 67/68 were the same way except if they had air conditioning then the had tinted. For sure.Bob

By inference, if the 65-66 GT350s had clear windshield, then wouldn't they also be clear?

If you are referring to the rear glass it isn't clear .Bob

Sorry, no. It was already established the rear glass was always tinted in the fastbacks; I was referring to the door glass. sorry for the confusion.

The glass came as a package .If the windshield was tinted from the factory the door glass was also . If the windshield was clear from the factory the side glass would be clear also. I hope that answers your question :D . Bob

Hmmm… I was pretty sure that a tinted windshield only was available as a separate option, For $21, while full tinted glass was $30.

According to the owner, his paperwork shows this 66 GT 350H is restored as it was delivered to Hertz in Florida. Note the tinted glass.

The factory records that SAAC has accumulated contradict the tinted glass. In my opinion SAAC registrars have more credibility and experience then your mentioned owners observation. I supposed the 67 style hood lanyards are supposed to be original too. Bob

I have always suspected he was afraid of losing them or some such.

Now, as for the configuration of the car, for all I know Hertz arranged for the local dealer to install that stuff, since I have never seen the paperwork, I have no idea. Considering it was a dark green/black car, as a rental in south Florida I can see why Hertz may have done that. Whether the car went through Shelby American with the equipment, or the changes were made between SA and Hertz, I have no way of knowing. I have seen this car up close and personal. If the changes were made by a Ford dealer on Hertz' order, though, whoever did the work did a factory-level quality installation, which would be surprising on a dealer job.

You can stretch your hypothetical scenarios as thin as needed but using the fact that a windshield is installed correctly for historical providence as any professional glass shop can do is paper thin :laf: . If your heat related line of logic held true they would have dealer installed A/C also (which they didn't in 66). The 66 Hertz was a no frills performance rental car that didn't come with any special options like wooden wheels ,superchargers, etc. installed by the factory or some dealer during rental service. They were all basically the same . The few differences between early and late versions can be read about in the SAAC registry. Holding up a restored car as a yardstick is not very practical as anything could have been changed in the 45 years since the car was in the Hertz fleet. The factory info is as close as a copy of the SAAC registry that records factory information for and also explains the whys and hows for a given year. The purchase of the Shelby "Bible" is a close as your computor keys and the Internet. The latest 2011 4th edition version covering the 65,66,67 cars is available now. Even though I have over 40 years of close interaction with Shelby cars by ownership ,restoration and concours judging,I refer to it often. As you post on this site often a registry purchase would help you make more accurate Shelby related statements in the future . Bob

Don't get me wrong, Ive never seen this provenance, so I can't really comment on it's validity.

Just a few years ago it presented as unrestored. He'd have probably left it that way, but with rust pinholes all over it, that wasn't a viable choice.

Looks pretty good, when cleaned, but in point of fact I'm told there were at least 500 tiny holes in this floor:

An original 65 Mustang GT350 owner, the late and great Mr Walter Walls (believe it was 5S127) showed me the original option list on a 65 Mustang GT350 that he got with his car from the dealer and tinted windows were listed. Front with or without the upper strong tint and side glass including vent.
He didn't buy it for his car though but I guess if somebody has the original dealer papers showing tinted windows as well as radio and outside mirror it would be okay from a show standpoint, correct?

That's why I mentioned the green car. His paperwork must be pretty convincing, or he wouldn't have insisted on it with such an extensive restoration. It's not like this part of his collection will be his daily driver.

Late to the discussion but a couple of observations

1- on the 66 with the banded windshield. The date and the style of CARLITE found on the windshield might prove interesting. Seems very blue for an original - most (especially in strong sun states) have browned by now.

2- As far as documentation. Options list (by themselves) are always suspect since there are so many examples were items were listed on these things but never made available. 68 427 engines comes to mind quickly ;)
