I'm installing a set of the new S&W green lines. My pod is original however the green lines were gone long before I bought the car 25 years back.

My question deals with the ammeter gauge. The mounting bracket with the 1/4-28 stud is dangerously close to the + and - posts of the gauge. In fact the bracket would touch the posts if not for the fish paper stuck in between. The bracket has reliefs filed to clear the nuts on the posts however it just seems way too close for comfort.

How was this assembled originally to insure no shorts? Would anyone happen to have a picture of the back of the gauge with the wiring attached prior to installing it in the pod?

I would really appreciate some direction here if possible.

    Thank you.

I would like to help but don't work on the amp/oil gauges enough to have the connections on the amp gauge wire attachment sequence on the gauge side committed to memory or paper. The terminal side yes ,the gauge side no :D. If it wasn't for the fact that the holiday honey do's and that I have too many car projects already apart I would take apart a pod and look. With that said can you take a picture of the back and post it so maybe to jostle my memory. Bob

Bob- The photos may or may not appear as I have not posted a pic on this forum before and am not proficient at it. If they make it you will see what I have. The bracket is basically touching the + & - posts. I wrapped some electrical tape around the bracket and inserted a thin piece of plastic in an attempt to insulate things. I'm not comfortable with the setup and am curious if there is a better solution to recommend.

I appreciate your time. Thank you.

Your bracket doesn't look like the one in my 67.
Mine sits higher and have a long screw in the middle that attaches to the back
cover. The car is in Sweden so I can't take any pictures. However, there was an article in the Shelby American 25-30 years ago showing this installation.
Believe it was written by Dave Mathews. Will see if I can find it.

    Hi again,
I found the article in The Shelby American #39 and it was written by Dave Mathews. The bracket shown in the article looks like yours but appears to be
less wide and consequently gets away from the posts and no isolation required. A scan will not be clear enough to post here.
Many years ago a guy in Walnut Creek, CA by the name of Mark Hefte sold
among other things NOS brackets and I bought 4 if I remember correctly.
Also bought some NOS front pods from him. Sorry, but the only thing I have
left is one NOS pod. Don't remember if it's for the oil or amp meters.
Should be fairly simple to make less wide brackets though.
Are your brackets attached to the front pods with two small screws on each
side? Oil pressure and amp meter guages have these holes in different places which means the front pods are different between the two.
Hope this is of some help to you.

Texas Swede- Thanks for your reply. My brackets do have the stud which goes throught back of the pod for a nut to secure things. Both brackets do fasten the side of the front pod, each with two small flat head screws.

The oil pressure gauge is straight forward with the bracket screwing directly to two post on the back of the case. Its installs with no problems. The amp gauge is a different story. The back of the case has just one post for mounting a bracket at the 6 o'clock position. At 12 o'clock is where the light socket plugs in so the bracket cannot really be secured to the back of the case at all. The gauge is basically "sandwiched" without screws between the inner lip of the front pod and the bracket with the bracket itself being secured to the front pod with the two small flat heads and the stud going through the back of the pod. Everything aligns nicely when together, I just have concerns about the bracket being against the hot posts with very little insulation between. I guess it works though as the car never burned to the ground over the last 25 years with the old black face gauges being installed the same way.

I can and will do more to insulate things. I was just wondering if my assembly is totally incorrect from the way it should be installed.

I will see if I can find SAAC 39. Not sure when it was published however I was a member from the mid 80's to mid 90's and have a number of SAAC publications prior to that.

Sorry for the long winded reply.

    Thank you.
