I'm trying to find info on a car my father in-law has in his garage. He says it is a 1971 shelby royal cobra. I seen it for the first time this weekend and i cannot find any info on the web about it. it is blue with two white stripes and white lettering on the side with the cobra on it. it is set up for racing, roll cage, five point harness seats, huge rear spoiler and the dash is like nothing I've ever seen. What can you tell me about this car ? he says he bought it at a aution in palm springs ten years ago. anything you can tell me about it would be greatly appreciated. thanks, Mick
Thanks, i will try to get some this weekend. Have you ever heard of a Royal Cobra? It's definitley not a production car, it was built for racing.
If the year is right, maybe Shelby Europa (around 14 made) or de Mexico (around 200 made)? Or the 71 Cobra prototype. Most likely wrong year or a Torino Cobra.
Re: Royal Shelby ok, here it is, the Royal Shelby... This is what I have for the story on this car, don't know if it's true or not but this is what I'm trying to find out. There were four of these built under the supervision of Carroll Shelby, one for the King of Sweden( Gustav), a good friend of Mr Shelby, one for Mr Shelby and two for the Shelby Heart foundation. This car is one of the two cars built for the heart foundation. The engine; built 351 Cleveland by Jack Roush, 10, 5:1 Forged pistons, Crane 280 Cam, Crane Rocker Rollers, all balanced and blueprinted. Moroso 8 qt oil pan, edelbrock performer intake and one of a kind (prototype) tall custom alum. valve covers and 425 hp. Hooker Exhaust, Trans, C6 with B/M 2200 stall converter, permacon oil cooler. Suspension Techniques, disc brakes all around, 9" curry rear axle with 3:08:1 highway gears. body and interior consist of 1968 shelby taillights, Boss front spoiler, custom built rear spoiler by wingmaster, custom built shelby front grill, alston roll cage and frame connectors all welded through the body. Curello leather seats engraved with "shelby" RJS racing seat belts and a grant wood /alloy steering wheel. custom built dash.
Well, I feel fairly comfortable in saying its not a vintage creation. Having said that Shelby has slapped his name on so many things to make a fast buck, its entirely possible.
The heart Fund was started in 1991 so this car if it were used to be sold for benefit of the heart fund hasn't been in existence too long. Shelby has a history of being involved with cars so that the extra money that his name commands helps with the proceeds that end up in the heart fund. I don't know if this is one of those deals or not. This is the first I have heard of it. Bob
I believe this one to be a tall tale. As someone here once said, extraordinary statements require extraordinary proof So far, I see nothing but a mismatched VIN to go along with the statements of it's authenticity. Bill S.
After a brief phone call and an email sent of the engine shot, I can tell you it is NOT a Roush built engine, what else is not what it appears to be.
