I currently have four 10 spoke wheels that are not countersunk for the lug nuts and a fifth that is countersunk. Did original 68' 10 spokes have the wheels countersunk for the lug nuts or were that flat...? and how can one determine if their 10 spokes are originals or reproductions...? Thank you guys for any help... KShelby
The originals will be rough sand cast on the back side the later ones and the repros are machined on the back side. S7MS markings on the backside of the spokes on originals. There were no countersunk valve stem hole or for the lugnuts.Tapered spokes. I hope this helps.
I thought I would mention unlike popular belief ,68 Shelby's did not come with ten spokes from the factory. 67 Shelby's had the ten spokes as a optional wheel.Orignal ten spokes will not clear the larger 68 single piston front brake calipers without spacers which is no doubt the reason that only 5 or so were equiped according to factory Shelby/Ford paperwork and then shipped out of the country. The later versions (made in the 70's) were machined on the backside which was one of the ways Shelby wheel co. modified the later ten spokes for additional brake caliper clearance . The ten spoke became a popular substitute for the hubcaps but didn't come that way from the factory . In concours we have yet (in the last 20 years) come across documentation that ten spokes were added by a Ford dealer when the cars were brand new to the original owner. So the over used "Dealer installed" explainatiuon doesn't hold much credibility in this case. The upgraded ten spoke wheel was not available for about 2 years after 68 production ceased.
Thanks Bob for the further explanation......what is interesting with my 10 spokes is that they are sand cast on the back, no countersunk hole for lug nuts, but has a countersunk valve stem hole and is not tapered...as well as no S7MS on the back. PS.....I am a hub cap lover and have them on my car for shows....they look so much better than the 10 spoke, but using these 10 spokes I have with TA's mounted on them for the weekend driving proposes...
