6s081 needs a new battery so I went to few places today, but could not find a group 22F or 24F that has the end mount tab. Does anyone know if any of the battery companies are making the old style, and if so who is it? If not, what are people doing to provide a solid mounting platform for the new batteries or is there another size/style that fits? Thanks, Jay
I have used the reproduction Autolite battery. It works. I got mine from Virginia Classic Mustang. http://www.virginiaclassicmustang.c...TERY-MAINTENANCE-FREE-SEALED-STYLE-P1603.aspx You have a genuine Shelby, damn it. Don't put a crappy looking battery on it. Z.
+1 . repros have maintenance free batt inside. no 22 F repros made yet but if you complain enough to retailers they might.
Thanks for the lead, but since my car has always spent more time on the track than in shows I am not concerned about the aesthetics and was hoping there was something I could pick up at a local parts store. In doing a bit more checking it looks like Exide still makes an end tab unit, but I have not been able to find any stores locally that carry them. Does anyone know if any of the national chains carry Exide? Jay
the reproduction Autolite's are not just pretty, they last a long time and do the job. But hey, it's your car & your mind seems settled on a battery that looks like it belongs in a tractor, so go for it. Z.
Great Idea! I think my tractor has a group 24 battery and it may have the side lip and so I could move it from the Kubota to the Shelby, and then put the new one in the tractor. I love the way this forum always seems to come up creative ideas to solve problems.
If your car is primarily a track car and you are not concerned about aesthetics wouldn't the battery be better and more appropriate in the trunk like most other track 65/66 cars? In that case the hold down wouldn't rely on the bottom tab
Actually it has been in the trunk for the last 20 years, but since I probably will not be racing anymore and only doing open track, I thought I might just put it back in the engine compartment because I thought it would be easy to do. Unfortunately, I was not aware of the battery changes that had been made. If the tractor battery doesn't pan out, I may clean up the trunk, put the tray back in the trunk, and be done with it. Jay
Well if your driving is "only doing open track" then your decision is easy. Although not competing the driving style is little different between "racing" and "open track" . It would NOT make sense to change up if that style of driving is your predominate driving style for the car.
Bob, While the driving style is the same, the goal of getting every tenth off the lap time differs so when I took the battery out and saw the corrosion on the base plate and other hardware I thought it would just be easier to relocate to the front. As stated above that did not turn out to be the case as there were no end lip batteries available locally and my tractor battery (while being a group 24) did not have the end lip mount so the battery went back into the trunk this AM. As a side note for anyone interested in what to do in the stock location, in addition to the repro batery, and the end lip Exide and Interstate batteries, Brant at Virginia Classic Mustang has a kit to convert the 65/66 Mustangs to the J hook setup for a very reasonable price as shown below. http://blog.virginiaclassicmustang.com/2008/04/65-66-mustang-battery-tray.html Jay
Jay, maybe different for you but not a lot of others myself included I strife to run the best I can within the limits
