Have been taking The Other Woman out alot this past month. Had her not want to start on Sunday after about a 20 minute cruise and then being shut down for about 20 minutes. Battery just seemed like it was dead, but she would turn over very slowly sometimes when hot, but would then fire right up. When I got home I checked the voltage while running at idle (~800RPM) and was seeing about 12.3VDC. I didn't have enough hands to check it at higher RPM, but still thought that was low. Was expecting at least 13VDC or so. Figured that I would just pop the alternator out and run it down to the local Auto Zone to have them test it just in case. It failed, the tester saying that the regulator was bad and it was only putting out about 8VDC. Replacements were $30 and $44 with a core trade-in, but I was hesitant as I wasn't sure if this alternator might have been original and if so, might be worth a whole lot more than the $10 core trade-in value. It is a Motorcraft as noted on the backside and there are some stamping numbers along one edge, but am hoping that someone might know if this alternator is original and what my options would be for having it refurbished if so (and what costs)... Pictures attached... Thanks, Bob
Original 1968 alternators were "autolite" brand. The Motorcrafts and alternators with numbers on the top edge are later.
Thanks Pete, so no big deal then on turning this in for the $10 core discount... Just figured that I'd check first... I'd be kicking myself if I turned it in and it was original.. Bob
There are also differences between 68 alternators depending when car was built (before/after approx 5-68)
Thanks Tim... After a little more research in my shop manual, they only reference Autolite alternators.. my build was Valentines Day 68, somewhat perfect for a red car... Bob
