"New" Vintage Plates in California

    For those in California, I saw on the news last week that the DMV is going to start re-issuing replica license plates of the 56-62 (gold w/black characters), 63-69 (black w/gold characters), and 70-? (blue w/gold characters). Has anyone heard any details about what the plates will look like? I believe they will need to be reflectorized and am curious if they will be stamped or painted. It sounds like a good thing and I am hopeful the plates will be close to what the originals look like, but would like to know a bit more before committing to buying a set.

    My understanding is they will not look identical to original plates for safety reasons.....You are better off finding a pair(and it must be a pair for the DMV)and getting them assigned to your car...There are dealers that sell them...Good Luck!!!

    With the difference in price ($50 for the new plates and ~$150 for the old plates) the new ones might viable if they are close. As I understand it, another plus is you can specify what sequence you want. This means I might be able get SFM081 for 6s081.

    Yeah but unfortunately this may be a case where"close is no cigar"....I have seen repro plates(and restored original ones)at shows that dont even look close.....If you see them next to an original the difference is obvious.....I suspect that will be the case with the modern versions....For a cruiser maybe but if youre really serious probably not...Plus if you are serious about authenticity the letter sequence on the plate should correspond to the year....my 2 cents

    I absolutely agree with you and that is why I am checking before I reserve a set. If I cannot determine what they look like beforehand, I will wait and see what the actual plates are like. For me the key is whether they are stamped. If they are, it would be fairly easy to make them look very close by repainting. If the characters are painted, it will be a non-starter. I may have to call the DMV to get an answer for that. As for the sequence, most of the original '66 cars I have seen carry RXX through TXX letters so using a SFM sequence would fit with originals.

    It is my understanding that the color combinations will be as close to identical as the originals, but they will be of a more modern flair with the proper reflective materials.
