Looking for some input from the owners of 1968 GT500s (nonKR) equipped with Automatic transmissions (C6). I have a 1968 GT500 that is in the process of restoration. She is disassembled to the point that I know the significant components on the Shelby are numbers matching with the exception of the carburetor (a 1969 warranty or recall replacement) and the transmission (a remanufactured replacement from the 1970s/early 1980s). I would like to replace the transmission with a rebuilt C6 using date code correct castings. My question: Is the tail shaft housing on the GT500 (nonKR) aluminum or cast iron? I have had the opportunity to crawl under two "original" GT500s and the tail shaft housing was aluminum. According to the reference books I have the tail shaft housing should be cast iron. I have found a concours restored GT500KR on Legendary Motors website and the tail shaft housing is clearly cast iron. Were GT500 tail shaft housings aluminum or "mixed" aluminum and cast iron? Were all GT500KR tail shaft housings cast iron? Opinions and evidence (as in whats under your 500) appreciated. Rick
Mine's aluminum and I would most guarantee (99%) that the GT500's were all alumiunum tail shafts and the "KR's" were cast iron. The engine plants and transmission plants built this stuff ahead months at a time. Also, the 1968 model year UAW FORD strike was in the winter of 1967 if I remember correctly, so the mismatch (KR with aluminum vs %00 with cast iron) is unlikely. Tom
Tom, Thank you for the response. Your 500 makes the third I know of with and aluminum tail shaft housing so I believe you are right that 500's were aluminum. Again, thanks! Rick
Seaweed, Thank you for looking and the response. Concensus from this forum, a couple other forums, and all references contected is that GT500 (non-KR) tail shaft housings were aluminum. Already found my date code correct C6 with aluminum tail shaft housing for rebuild. Thanks again. Rick
