Hi all, my name is Tracey and i m not happy! Reading all the comments from u mustang owners is really upsetting. My husband has always worked restoring his own cars for the past 15 years, and none of them would come close to my dream car, the Shelby GT500!!! Give me some support guys and harass him with me, all i need is a shell and my dream car can be a reality. We have come to an agreement that if i can locate a shell suitable for restoration, he will bring it back to life. Any input at this time would be much appreciated, wish me luck, take note...I m in Australia!!! Tracey Shelby Hackett!!!!!!!
Well, it depends on how much money you want to thro at it. A while ago there was a Shelby on the internet auction that went for almost 63000, & believe me it needed alot of work. { 100,000 ?? ] I saw this car in person & no way would it get my money. On the other hand their was this guy that would come to the cruise nights with a 68 Shelby conv. { very nice} he ended up selling it for 60000. He got tired of it & wanted to buy a boat. go figure. ---S.
How much does a Shelby "shell" cost now? I would.... guesstimate that a real Shelby "shell" (if you can find one) has to be $40,000 minimum. Am I wong? What have you guys seen pricewise for a "shell"?
Yes i am, i m interested in the 67 (if thats elanor in gone in 60 seconds)??? Im not sure on the currency change over to the Australian dollar, it was recommended to me to buy one in the US and ship it over.
Better think about being happy with a diecast. ERTL's are around $30.00, Lane's $130+. If there were any cheap shells around, we'd snap them up.
Is that your middle name or maiden name? If its your maiden name I'd check to see if you are related.
TJHackett, I say build a clone for a third the cost of an original. use better suspension and Braking components than the original. Eleanor is a customized version of a 67 GT500. it is a Movie car that was never produced by Ford in 1967. after the Movie, Carroll Shelby got together with Unique Performance and licensed his name for them to produce these cars. and many other folks have simply built clones for less money.
Fulfill your dreams. Wait for the chance to buy the real thing. There is nothing like a real 1967 GT 500. Two 427 tunnel ports----two 428's
Could you suggest where to start if i decided to clone one. Yeah, i think you're right, there's nothing like the real thing, thanks for the pics. R u trying to rub salt in my wounds?? Nah, my middle name isn't Shelby, but the response from members has been great, great club, i just want to find out as much as i can so we can get one started. Thanks!!!
The only players left in the game either own a car or cars or have the money to play with. As prices jump at every auction, even the basket cases are fetching huge dollars. Just the facts , Tout
With regards to cloning, any 67 or 68 Fastback carcass would work for an Eleanor project. If you want a 67 Shelby clone, you will need to concentrate your search on finding a nice rust-free or low rust 67 body. The Mustangs are uni-body so you really need to do a thorough inspection to check for frame damage and other underbody surprises. Prepare to spend some $$ on suspension and other important areas that are necessary to make the car driveable and also safe i.e. brakes, steering etc.. The Shelby stuff is mostly cosmetic i.e. inboard/outboard lights, scoops and front/rear fiberglass. Cost will be determined by how authentic you want it to look. The more you spend, the closer it will look to be an original. I have seen some pretty good clones that were exact down to the smallest detail. The only thing it didn't have was the right serial number. You have to be careful with respect to the last comment because this is where the line gets crossed between "Real and Un-Real" . Many times a person will spend more money trying to recreate his dream Shelby that after a while it takes on a life of it's own and becomes a Real Shelby. That's okay as long as it is not mis-represented to the general public in this manner. You probably get a good idea of what the clones are going for by looking at Ebay and other auction sites. If you think you can re-create one cheaper and have the time , dollars and patience, Go For It !!
There is a person down south that handles mostly Shelbys, & I believe he once said any Shelby no matter what condition, as long as it had a clean title, & build tag ,& just a hulk, is worth 50,000.--- but not my 50 grand.--S.
Thanx for the input, i think this would be the way for me to go. As for mis-representing the general public, i totally agree. My husband is a perfectionist working with body and paint so i know the outcome of our project would be of very high standards, perhaps this would be the closest i could get to the real thing! (for now) Do you know where i might find info to create a clone?
The info can be found in various pieces of literature i.e. Shelby Registry, Shelby Buyers Guides, Mustang Monthly magazine etc.. You can also take tons of pictures or videos of Real Shelbys and start from there. Parts catalogs, assembly manuels are also good sources. The hardest part is finding a good body and cash to lay-out for the project. Getting the Shelby look is easy, the hard part is acknowldeging and accepting the car for what it is. Take care !! Doc
