Does anyone know about 1966 Shelby sapphire blue. I have begun painting my car and the paint code number I got from several sources including the SAAC registry for Sapphire Blue also cross refrences with Guardsman Blue...are they the same color???? I hope so it looks like a blue metallic with a slight green tint. Also is the bottom edge of the rocker panels that hang down painted body color or blacked out from factory? I was told for a 70 Boss concours correct was to have this painted black, but whats correct for a 66 Shelby Fastback? Someone help me before the color base goes on tomorrow morning. Thanks Paul
I'm looking at 66 #2164, and it's Sapphire. I've never heard that color cross ref'd to Guardsman. In 67, the Guardsman is the darkest of the blues, and if anything, the Acapulco in 67 is close to 66 Sapphire. Sapphire is a T'bird color. The rocker part that hangs down, are also blue, and I believe this car to be fairly unmolested and original in paint. I have photos of 2164 in my photo gallery.
This is the one I sold earlier this year. Gardsman Blue is not the same. It was actually a T-Bird color called Bright Blue Metallic. Dupont number is 4735
Yes I know it was a T-Bird color, the color of the car looks to be exactly the same as the car in KenG's post. It is close to a Acapulco Blue but has a bit of green in it. Commish, it the dark blue 67 color you are refering to possibly Nightmist blue (navy blue). When we put the dupont color code in it said bright blue metallic and the ditzler code said guardsman blue. There are guardsman blue stripes on my 66 continuation car and they seem to be exactly what was mixed for the sapphire blue. O well we will see by this afternoon how it looks. I will let you guys decide if its right. Thanks!
Shelby told me there is no formula for Gaurdsman Blue because painters were all drunks and his guys just mixed paint till they got a color they thought looked right. I got the feeling he dosen't like painters. It was funny that he told me this while Jerry Pitt was shotting his photo for the cover of Mustang Monthly ( Jan 95 edition). After that we went down and shot some photos of him in 2.5 cars I had painted. The pinch welds should be blacked out. Good Luck on you paint job. Larry
LARRY, THANKS FOR THE INSIDE INFO. SAPPHIRE BLUE IS NOTED IN SEVERAL PLACES AS CODE#13075 AND IT LOOKS VERY CORRECT AND FANTASTIC. AS FOR THE PINCH WELDS WERE ALL MUSTANGS FROM THE FACTORY BLACKED OUT OR JUST CERTAIN YEARS? THANKS PAUL
Only the light colored cars were blacked out by Ford: Whites & yellows, to name a few--no dark colors were blacked out (as the pinch welds didn't show as much).
Great! I will keep the pinch welds blue. Someone I know got points counted off at a national Boss show because his pinch welds were painted lime green like the rest of the car. Thanks for the help.
