i just checked my branda catalogue from several years ago , and they claim the stripe dimensions in their catologue were direct from shelby american in 1965, as designed by peter brock. . stripes were intended to be tapered, being wider in the middle than at the front or rear...if not tapered then the stripes appear to get smaller the further back on the car they go. when tapered they visually appear to be the same. for what its worth, acknowledging that many dealers probably did their own thing and variability existed, the branda reported measurements are : * a constant 2" between the stripes from front to rear. * the stripes are 9-1/4" at the bottom of the lower front valance which is the same dimension as the front of the hood over the grille * stripes measure 9-1/4" at the front of the hood and taper out to 10-1/2" at the cowl below the windshield as well as 10-1/2" at the roof at the windshield * the top stripes start at 10-1/2 " at the front and taper slightly to 10-3/8" at the back of the roof at the rear window moulding edge. * the stripes on the trunk are 10-1/8" wide at the rear window moulding tapering to 10" at the rear of the trunk and 10" down behind the rear bumper to the bottom of the rear valance which is also 10" now, when you are picking fly droppings out of pepper, like these measurements that vary an 1/8" or so, one can imagine the variablity of the dealers / painters who masked them out for painting. without a template it would be hard to imagine out of 10 cars how many were the same exact measurements when done. I dont make this up, i just report the news, as branda printed. The original instructions Shelby used and supplied to dealers called for trappered stripes (thinner at the front and rear of the car) to reduce the coke bottle effect that consistant thickness stripes would visually cause. Since prep was just enough we would expect to see paint overspray into the cowl sections. If they were dealer and even Shelby done, there would be overspray in a number of other areas. Of course these cars are often over restored. ... remember a R model that had stripes applied inside the cowl then they reinstalled the cowl. I just looked over my 65-350 car to help a friend out on his 65 350 car purchase and I discovered something I think is unusual on my car. The Le Mans stripes dont exactly line up and the car was ordered with factory Le Mans stripes. It seems that the stripes on the fiberglass hood are narrower then the stripes on the cowl vent area and on the top. Basically, the top and cowl stripes are wider than the stipes on the hood. Is this correct or did someone mess around with it. There is about a 2 inch gap between the stripes thats even through out the car but the width of the skunk stripes are not the same. Whats also interesting is that the cowl vent didn't get covered up when they painted the stripes. I can see blue paint inside the cowl vent area. Thanks for any info. jon
The stripe dimensions are also in the back of the latest SAAC Registry.
