I have a 86 Shelby Charger and have been trying to figure out a problem on why I am not charging correctly. I have replaced the battery, new alternator and a new power module.. but still not charging.. Why? anyone have any clue what to look for next? Does the ECU have anything to do with charging of the car. ? Any help appreciated Bruce
Ok I found out that the Logic Module also controls the voltage along with the power module. Now is the logic module the ECU? Cause I have a spare one of those. Actually it is the racing ECU... Can I just plug and play that ? Which brings me to another question, I bought the performance ECU but never put it in. Someone told me that there is a problem with the vacuum hoses popping off with using the performance ECU. Any comments on that.. as it boost the PSI up another 2 - 3 psi. thanks
I was thinking the power module, the computer under the hood that is inline with the airbox. As far as the logic module, you can just plug and play the performance unit. I never had problems with my GLH-S blowing off vacuum lines. It wouldn't hurt to replace those old vacuum hoses and fittings anyway. Don't forget those check valves, they are needed and should not be eliminated.
Yeh, I did replace the power module that is inline with the airbox but still not charging. The only other thing per the 3 big shop manuals I got with the car is the logic module also controls the amount of voltage allowed through the alternator. So if thats off, it wont charge right. Now when they say Logic module, are the meaning the main computer. That's my question or is it simply another module. 'cause I got a performance computer. I want to put it on anyway but want to ask the queston of blowing off vacuum line. Someone I know that has a Shelby said when he put on the performance computer, it was a huge difference but was blowing off his vacuume lines. What check valve are you talking about not to eliminate? Does putting on the computer hurt anything else. What differences will I notice other than 2 psi more boost? thanks Bruce
The logic module is the one inside the car behind the passenger kick panel. Go ahead and replace it with the performance module. You will get better spark and boost curves. It also changes the fan cooling schedule. I believe it adds about 25 horsepower which is very noticeable in a car originally rated at 146 hp. Make sure your vacuum lines are routed properly as per underhood decal. There are check valves in line with the turbo control solenoids. Replace any lines, tees, and fittings that are worn or heat stressed. If in doubt, replace it. These cars are very sensitive to leaks in the vacuum/boost system. There is no link between the performance logic module and problems with vacuum lines blowing off. If lines are blowing off, the fault lies within the pneumatic system. The only possible negative to the performance logic module is that you may start running lean. The performance module is supposed to be compatible with the stock fuel system. If you notice your spark plugs are reading lean, then you will need to upgrade your fuel delivery. robin
Thanks Robin, I very much appreciate the help and advice. I will try that and see if putting in the performace ECU fixes my charging problems. . It should as I have replaced just about everything else.. Im also anxious to see how it performs with the performance unit.. Im new to this board and just purchased my 86 shelby last week.. Its a low milage Black/silver .. The cars been stored for a number of years and is in really nice shape and Im anxious to show it off at the car shows with my other cars. I will be going over the whole car over time ...making sure everythings up to par.. Ill let you know if the new computer works. I also got with the sale a Hot cam, Im not sure if Im going to put that in or sell it.. not sure how much difference it makes... I want to leave the car as much stock as I can, but if the cam makes a diff Ill put it in also.. Ill check my vacuum lines as well and make sure they all ok.. Heres a couple pics of the car.. from original owner.. car was also featured in a movie on life and times of Carrol Shelby back in late 80's http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8430/7034jo.jpg http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9767/aa33fk.jpg http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6960/s40tg.jpg http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6433/f535fq.jpg .Bruce
Are those Shelby Performance floor mats? They are a hard to find item for the Chargers. Nice looking car robin
I guess so... what came with the car.. the cars all original except the battery and tires and polished wheels.
Wow, nice car. I simply ziptied the vacuum lines everywhere for extra insurance. New lines that are properly sized should'nt blow off. If you haven't already found them, there are some great tech sites for our cars. Hope to see you around!
