Re: hello from 68 shelby # 03223 new member ne pix

    guys
i'm trying to post some pix -- the 65 vette was a b'day gift for my brother's 40th b'day -- the car under the cover is a 70 gto 455 vert...and the kr vert is number 3223...it is all original, never had the motor out of the car...it should be highland green...you can still see the green in a few spots -- it's under alcopulco blue and then this red...this red has been on the car for at least 10 years -- i think it is an originally NY car but was in nevada and california for 25 years at least...let me see if I can get these to post before I go blabbing about their history -- john

    hey guys
i couldn't get the other photos to post...so disregard the mention of the vette and the gto -- i have since the pix of the kr -- changed out those tires as they were rubbing -- too much rubber -- those black plates are obvioulsy purely decorative...i have since legally registered the car to my name -- i think this car was in a large collection in northern cal. -- apparently the guy had 7 shelbys and 4 cobras -- real ac's -- and this the second to last to sell -- he had a 69 500 with race history (is that possible? i might be making that up -- i do remember it had race decals or stickers or numbers on the sides) -- anyway -- what should I do about finding some owners -- i have registered with SAAC -- so mr. liska knows I now own the car -- but he told me that the last info they had on the car was 20 + years ago -- any help? -- john

I just found the photo copied page from the registry that my high school buddy faxed me -- the info is hard to read but it says the following about 3223 ..."shipped to Gotham Ford (New York, NY) 6/26/68. Invoice dated 6/3/68. Original owner Joseph Radosh purchased the car 12/18/68. subsequent owners Darrol Strong (Las Vegas NV) R.D. Rankin (until 10/4/80) Present owner Steve Mason (Fountain Valley, CA). The car shows 20,151 miles on the odometer and has original belts, ???? and smog system; the engine has never been out of the car." -- all of this info was listed in 1/82. So Vincent Liska was happy to hear from me about 3223.

I may now set about finding the previous owners to see if they have photos or info. I can't seem to find the build sheet in the radio wiring but I'm about to do a complete restoration with Bruce in Riverside CA and he will check too. If someone has a registry -- they can check to see if what I wrote is accurate...the ???? is a four letter word that I can't read...could be tires? -- any help would be great. Thanks -- John

As you suspected, tires. Must have been babied to have 20K and original bias plies. Also built as highland green, black interior, white top, 4 spd, steel wheels, w/ ac, w/tilt

That's 120k miles -- it has to have turned...i think...and I was under the impression that it was a hub cap car and there is no a/c -- does have tilt -- the 10 spokes that are on there are repros i'm almost positive they are...I feel dumb that I haven't gotten a marti report or gotten more involved in the car since I got it -- I have other cars-- the shelby is the most valuable -- but I get caught up in other stuff -- i have 2 sons (2yo and 4yo) -- I'm busy -- I've only driven the car maybe 10 times in the year I've had it -- It stays covered in my garage -- although I'm about to send it away for a year for a complete resto -- yikes -- john

The 20K I'm referring to is the 1982 info in the registry. It did have hubcaps, thats what steel wheels means. Only 3 cars left AO Smith w/ 10 spokes. According to registry it came w/ ac but I'd get the Marti to confirm/deny.
    Tim
ps: If you send me a close up of front and back of wheels I'll tell you if they are repros or not. From pics they look like they might be vintage 68 10 spokes.

A Gotham Ford car would have paperwork (original sales invoices). Have you got the copies from Kevin Marti yet??? If not, do it right away!

my ignorance abounds..I'm gonna try to post 2 additional pix -- neither of which will be helpful in determining the vintageness of my wheels but you will see my two goats and the shelby at my storage space -- the blue goat vert is a 69 4 speed all correct (a guy wired me 40k for it last spring...just from e-bay pix...I miss it -- it was a 400 that was soooo powerful) -- the black 70 gto is an original 455 car that is one of 241 made and it's originally triple black (it's auto but fun) i still have this car

as for my shelby -- the wheels irk me as when i engage first gear and the car begins to slowly move it does a wiggle like it's shifting from one side to the next...makes me think that the car has spacers...to accomodate the bigger wheels...I don't know..I'm doing a poor job of repeating the guess of my crazy greek mechanic (he's a complete genius..truly gifted with muscle cars pontiac is his forte -- all GM really but he actually likes the shelby...loved the tilt wheel function -- he had to lift the engine to change the plugs which were the original plugs!)

    more to follow -- john

oh I also get the feeling that the 120k was put on the car in the first 14 years __ the car has been in collections since then (my theory) -- i need to go check the odometer right now...j

couldn't upload the 3 car pic -- will try again later

Yikes, you have a shimmy in the back? Are you sure your lug nuts are compatible with your wheels. Some wheels have a shouldered lug others have a flat lug and use a washer. You have to make sure the wheels and lugs match.

    tim et al....
I just spoke to the marti people who were really cool and you guys are right -- they checked and they do have the original invoice for the car -- it's a non air car...i'm excited to get the full report...3 months it looks like ...also as for the shake in the back -- it could be an axel...but it's just one shift...it's not continuous as you drive -- or i should say it's not noticeable after it does it the first time form 0 to 5 mph....i drove the car today it was fun -- being on the forum made me want to drive it -- plus i'm in los angeles -- it was 60 and sunny today -- top down....i will try to figure out the poting pix thing -- i wanna place the 10 spokes up at close range so you guys can weigh in on their era -- john

Congrats on finding such a nice car and having good weather to drive in. My computer says it's 28 outside. Your 10 spokes look like the the ones that are currently available. Or should I say like the ones I bought ten years ago. The originals and early repops had more taper to the spokes. I will bet if you pull a lugnut it will have a shank and washer instead of a 45 degree taper. Hope you get the rear end figured out. Nothing worse that a preety car or woman with a loose rear.

Did you order the original "Eminger- sales invoices" ? The Marti Reports are nice, but most items for 1968 Shelbys are known. The invoices are original paperwork for your car. They will overnight the paperwork to you if you ask nice. Check those lugs and see if they match the wheels you have. Try adding some friction reducing additive (available from FORD) it should quiet down the clunk in the traction-lok rear axle.

I could be mistaken, but I thought the original 10 spokes, had the valve stem in a diff. location than the repos. [ on top of the rim, as opposed to the side ] ??? --S.

Just found this pict. on e-bay of the white 68- K.R. there is a close up of the orginal 10 spoke wheel with the valve stem on the top of the rim near the spokes. Why did they change the spoke location on the repos.???--S.
