In 1967 Shelby received the GT 500's with the 428 engines already in them. He made some modifications to them,[intake, carbs, distributor, air cleaner, valve covers, dampner and pulley] but the original engine with no internal modification remained in them. As stated, the Ford vin. number is stamped in both fender aprons.

Actually though most of the 67's were Q's there were some S codes as well.

    Good morning,
After I bought my 67 in 1977, I took out the interior and
found 6 pages of production documents from the San Jose'
factory under the back seat. It said it was one of 106 cars
with Shelby American named as customer and 402F package.
All parts deleted and added for this special package are specified
and the engine, gear box, brakes, export reinforcement, rear axle,
etc are all in there. This means that that engine etc. were installed
at San Jose and not at Shelby. As regards the engine code, only the
first (prototype) GT500 car had an S and thereafter they used the Q
mentioned above. This means that you can be sure a car is a genuine 67
Shelby GT500 if the engine code in the Ford number is a Q as it wasn't
used for anybody else than the cars sold to Shelby American.

A little known fact is that there were a few "A" code GT350's that were built in 1967. I was obviously skeptical about this when I first heard of them but I did indeed verify this directly with Dave Mathews who is the 1967 Shelby Registrar. It is true! :D
