So, I got a call yesterday from a dealer who was getting in a Ford GT (I am still on their list, but no longer interested), and I chatted with him about the GT500. He told me that they had taken a deposit yesterday from one person, who will be top of their list when it comes time to start ordering the cars. I immediately jumped on the phone to the guy at the dealers who had taken the order. Now, I am on several dealer lists around the place (#1 on at least one list), but this guy offered me the chance to be #2 on their list, if I would immediately put down a $5k deposit. I was ready. I was salivating. I was fumbling for my credit card. Then came the kicker - they would be selling the car at MSRP+$20k! Yikes! So, I told him that was way too much, but that he could put my name down on the list for when they come down to a reasonable price. He told me that he had people "lining up to get them at that price", and really didn't seem to interested in getting my business. Now, I already know the dealers are going to try and squeeze as much as they can out of the first hype on the GT500. And I am all for the dealers being able to ask what they like - if they can sell them at that price, then good luck to them. What I object to is the way the guy blew me off when he found out I wasn't going to play his game. I will buy a GT500. But I am almost certainly not going to buy one from that dealer! I wonder just how many potential owners the dealers are going to turn off like this... So, anyone willing to go MSRP+20k?
Not I. In a small town near where I live, I was offered a GT500 for MSRP + $5k. They feel the average national market will be $10k over sticker. So I should jump at this opportunity. I declined their kind offer. robin
The problem will arise with the guys who have more.... money and ego than they do sense. They could care less if they pay $20,000or even $40,000 over MLP as long as they get to be the first on their block with a Shelby G.T.500. If everybody told these greedy thieves "no deal" except at MLP then they wouldn't even be talking this crap.
If I were one of those guys that had to have one I would pay 5k over sticker. I don't really get excited over new cars unless they have 12 cylinders and multi turbos.
If the GT500 had an air of "exclusivity" like your Mercedes, I would have no qualms of paying over sticker. robin
+$20 K, too rich for me, I don't have money to burn. edit: that dealer is just fishing to see if he can find some suckers.
I agree, $20k over sticker is just fishing for a sucker. I love the GT500, but I didnt just fall off the turnip truck this morning. I'm on the list of the two SVT dealers in our area, but if people want to start bidding the price up above sticker + $5k, then, I'll just go buy a Saleen S281 Supercharged....dealers within driving distance already offer them for around $48k.
I wanted a 2000 cobra R really bad back then, only 300 made. Look at those markups and what you can buy one for now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-Ford-Mustang-Cobra-R-Always-Garage-Kept_W0QQitemZ4607997555QQcategoryZ6236QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I could not open the selling price of the Cobra R since I do not have an ebay account. What did it go for?
The Dealers are the ones killing production on the cool cars with all the Mark Up Prices. Look what happened to the Prowler and the the SSR Truck. The ended the Prowler because Sales were slow & low (because the dealers would double the MSRP) and I was told by a Chevy Salesman that the SSR is ending because of the same reason. I was told that the Dealers Buy the cars from the Manufacturer which is why they can add the mark ups.
For the first question: Willing to pay $20K over MSRP? The answer is NO! Am I willing to pay anything over MSRP? Maybe. I totally agree that the dealer's greed is often the cause of lower production numbers. On another thread an SVT rep. was quoted that they have the capacity to build 20,000 units a year (I think I have the right number); but the Ford rep. at the Baltimore Show said the decision has been made to make between 10K to 15K the first year. I hope many prospective buyers are rejecting the dealer's huge 'availability' surcharges
That's a good point, and it's hurting the whole company. Sure, I am very excited about buying the car for it's target MSRP of low 40s. However my enthusiasm quickly declines as markups are added which do not add to the value of the car. I don't like paying for nothing.
