Discussion in 'Shelby Mustang List' started by Mitchell Pinnix, Feb 16, 2006.

  1. How do you tell the difference between an original 67 Shelby owner's manual and one of the newer reprints?
    Thanks,
    Mitchell

  3. That does not hold true for all original 67 Shelby manuals. I have an NOS one, and it does not have that pasted page. The best way to tell is the originals if you look closely they had a grain type texture on the cover, where as the repros are more smooth without texture.

  4. Mitchell,

Some of the reproduction 67 Shelby manuals are very good. They even fool the
so-called experts. I have had a few different reproduction manuals through
the years so I could keep my originals with my other literature. The older
reproductions were smooth. The older one I had got stained so about a year
ago I purchased a new reproduction on eBay. It actually has more of a grainy
texture than the original one that came in the car. All of the originals I
have ever seen had the"NEW CAR WARRANTEE" stickers in the back of the
manual. Don't be fooled by buying an NOS manual without the stickers. They
    are reproductions.

My advice to you is, you should choose your words carefully before submitting your opinion. I do in fact own an NOS manual, that is very much real, that does not have the sticker. You are in essence misleading Mitchell.

  6. I think it it interesting to have potentially two original items thay
differ. I do not see any reason that the warranty would be applied as a sticker
unless there was a change in the warranty terms.

could we see scans of the wording of each?

  7. Kenny,

I expressed my opinion and the opinion of those I respect, who are made up
of original owners and real experts. I am sorry if you were taken on the
manual you thought was original. It is like owning a 39 year old car years
later and ignoring the fact that it could have been changed at some point,
by an earlier owner. It doesn't make it correct. Paying money for something
that isn't correct, doesn't make it NOS.
Years ago you told me that 10 spokes with the valve stems between the spokes
were original. It was an another error you made and an expensive mistake for
the group you lectured about 10 spoke wheels.

  9. Gentlemen:

I have to laugh because it is really NOT me calling everyone "Gentlemen"....so GANG

I have to agree with Jeff and Peter. I have not seen an NOS so I cannot vouche for anyone in this case regarding NOS, HOWEVER, I do have an original and an old reproduction at hand.
What I have seen is what Peter and Jeff said about labels being glued to the back of the manuals. I also want to point out that the originals have perforation in the paper where you can pull apart
Customer Maintenance Order section where as the repops have none and is a complete whole page. I included pictures for everyone to see.

I hope this answers any questions that others may have.

  10. Someone forget the owners manuals may have been done for Shelby American?
There were running changes throughout the three years on almost everything
Shelby did. Could it be possible they printed only about 3000 of the manuals as
an estimate for preduction and had to print more later? Is it possible that
Ford didn't like something in the language? There are numerous
possibilities from the batch size and the printer making a change based on supplies.
The one thing we can be sure of is this is another Shelby variation.

You must be mistakening me for someone else, or did not listen to what I had said. 10 spoke wheels with the valve stem coming out inside the spokes are an original Shelby American product, and most have the S7 part number on the back side, they are just a later over the counter version, and not assembly line correct. I can give you Rick Radtke's phone number if you'd like, he is one of the premier Shelby literature dealers/collectors. He is the one that sold me the manual 15 years ago, and he can explain the manual differences to you.

  13. I don't recall ever seeing a post by Ken in which he ever stated anything
other than what he posted below. I have also watched Ken at several shows over
the years as he goes over this very detail; last year at Lime Rock a small
crowd was gathered around him, and followed him from car to car as he pointed
things like this out. As far as the Manual, Ken does indeed have a
Minty-Mint NOS one that I compared my original to. Not all of them have a (or any)
stickers on them. Mine, while a little worn, shows no evidence of any ever on
it. Pages 49 through 54 have very fine perforations. Also look for the grain
on the cover, and the fine "zig-zag" background on the coupons, especially
where it goes through the big "Q", they should be light, but distinct.

I expressed my opinion and the opinion of those I respect, who are made up
of original owners and real experts. I am sorry if you were taken on the m
anual you thought was original. It is like owning a 39 year old car years later
and ignoring the fact that it could have been changed at some point, by an
earlier owner. It doesn't make it correct. Paying money for something that isn't
    correct, doesn't make it NOS.
Years ago you told me that 10 spokes with the valve stems between the spokes
were original. It was an another error you made and an expensive mistake for
the group you lectured about 10 spoke wheels.

  14. Fwd: Re: 67 Shelby Owner's Manual Question

    Hum...

I have to say... One of the things I learned from these parts as I have heard this before from several hardcore Shelby guys is that there are differentiation of parts such as:
Factory Assembly Part, Over The Counter NOS, and Reproduction.

The Factory Assembly Part would be considered an original. The Over The Counter NOS would be a "middle man" where its not necessarily an original but its not a reproduction either. On a scale of 1-
10 with 10 being the best, Original would be 10 and Over The Counter NOS would be 5 with respect to Reproduction being 1.

Grading like this helps understand that sometimes NOS does not mean Original BUT at the same time its not a Reproduction either.

I think this is what Peter and Jeff were trying to say with the right frame of mind.

Mike, what car number is your 67-350. Im curious since I have not seen a manual like yours. I would have to say, things like what you described could be part of changes through 67 Shelbys but its
hard to say without putting the car into a time frame for studying.

Dave Mathews taught me the first lesson to 67 Shelbys and that is time frame of the car's production is critical to explaining the changes made during assembly. These small changes or
variances would be what I call "anomalies." It happens but no one knows why - yet.

    PJ:

You must be mistakening me for someone else, or did not listen to what I had said. 10 spoke wheels with the valve stem coming out inside the spokes are an original Shelby American product, and most
have the S7 part number on the back side, they are just a later over the counter version, and not assembly line correct. I can give you Rick Radtke's phone number if you'd like, he is one of the
premier Shelby literature dealers/collectors. He is the one that sold me the manual 15 years ago, and he can explain the manual differences to you.

  15. First, thanks for your inputs. This is an old subject which keeps on getting
kicked around. Some of the contributors have previously discussed this
issue. The original manuals that came in the cars throughout the 1967 model
year have certain characteristics that can't be challenged.
The point however is how can we tell an original from a reproduction.
Many if not all of the Black and White manuals are reproduction. Branda sold
them for years. It would surprise me to learn that dealers would hand out a
manual to owners without the tear out coupons.
My point to Mitchell was that some of the reproduction manuals are so good,
they even fool the so-called experts. The high quality reproduction that I
purchased has to be studied closely in order to tell. It has the textured
cover and the correct lighter "zig zag" background on the coupons and
    through the large Q.
The problem with not having the stickers, is that the warranty and the
coupons would not match. The extended warranty and some of the warranty
disclaimers would also not be present.
The coupon perforations are also key and must be present.
As far as the 10 spokes with the valve stem between the spokes are
concerned, they were manufactured by Shelby's wheel company. They were
manufactured after the Federal safety regulations concerning lug nuts were
put into effect which was after these cars were built. They are also not the
original 10 spokes offered for the car.

Think you'll find many of us refer to "Over The Counter parts" as replacement or NOS replacement parts

    Just a comment

One of the folks I know used to respond to that "wrong bolt" stuff with "OH,
NO; I guess I'll just have to send [my car] through the crusher ASAP"....

It is a bit strange Dan. Hell these cars have lived with many lives for a long time and s**t happens. I remember looking at a 63 corvette split window with out the split and three tail lights as opposed to only two. Back in those days that was the thing to do. Who cares, you can sort it.

Hell cars caught fire or got in wrecks etc. We try to keep our cars I suppose the best we can. But the collectors God bless em, are the ones, when they pay top top dollar, require the highest in original spec. The only thing I sometimes resent is the my car is better than your car syndrome and the level of bragging rights they seem to have. I have had some top metal in my life but I always would try to compliment the guys with the lesser speced vehicles. At the end of the day If a normal working guy is fortunate enough to own a Shelby. I think that that is a compliment to the vehicle type as he has to sweat allot more to own one than a guy who has unlimited resources of funds who just goes out and buys one. There is a bit of ego going on with these cars nowadays with some of the new purchasers and I think that is a shamed as they miss the spirit of the vehicle and the people who own them. I am just a lowly photographer with out huge bucks. The sacrifices that go into keeping my car in a fairly good condition proves that spirit, although the wife shakes her head sometimes. So guys with the top cars count your blessings and try not to leverage your self esteem by pointing out deficiencies of others vehicles as it is real boring.

    Regards

    Randall Paul
