What is considered early? Howard told me that my # 128 should have the 15 x 5 1/2 rims and that the change over occured in the low 200s with respect to the production dates and record keeping. personally though, I don't care about the wheel size...I just want to see if the car will corner better or make my turns easier at lower speeds. Im getting dirty looks from my neighbors when I turn real fast on the corners. jon Quoting James G Cowles <shelbyparts (AT) msn (DOT) com>: - unless you have a VERY early 65 the wheels are 15 x6 - - - >From: jonlee (AT) wt (DOT) net - >To: Shelby List <shelbymustang (AT) carmemories (DOT) com> - >Subject: 65 -350 Steel Wheels - >Date: Fri, 20 Jan 2006 10:42:29 -0600 - > - >Does anyone know how the 65 - 350 KH 15x5 1/2 steel wheels perform/handle? - >Im thinking about putting my KH steel wheels back on the 65-350 car. - >Thanks - > - >jon - > - - _________________________________________________________________ - Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Interesting. My #128 was recieved by Shelby on 3-25-65 which is about the same week that #195 was received on 3-20-65. #195 is known to have 15 x 5 1/2. If I remember correctly, the cars were never built by VIN number sequence. I have those American Torq Thrust rims on it now. The tires are a bit wide and the tires will scrubb the fenders when I turn into the corners hard. I dont know what the size of the Torq Thrusts are but I feel like trying something different. jon Quoting James G Cowles <shelbyparts (AT) msn (DOT) com>: - First 100 cars. Hey guy, the original Torque Thrust R model wheels were exactly 0 offsett. The repos are approx. 1/2 inch offsett to the outside (positive). This will cause larger tires to rub. You can have a machine shop take 1/2 inch off the backside where the wheel bolts to the hub. This will enable some larger tires. In the old days a 550 x 15 fit perfectly. You had to roll the fender lips to get the 600 x 15's on the car. In modern sizes, a 245 x 60 R 15 should fit a 0 offsett wheel with only minor lip rolling on the front. A 235 will require no mods. If you drive slower in your neighborhood, the squealing will go away and the neighbors will not complain.......ever try to lick a Tootsie pop all the way to the stick? You always end up crunching into the good part. Driving a Shelby quickly with finess is an art form to be practiced to perfection. Watch out for the bad guys with the roof lights, they have a blue light special you don't want. I don't think you can do this with the "new" repops; I believe a club member up here mentioned that the current casting doesn't have the extra "meat"/thickness in the center section that the originals did, so if you machine down the current casting rims, the hub area ends up thin enough to raise safety issues.
That's good imput. My info is obviously dated. When Paradise Wheels did the repo wheels, he basically cut the back side and polished the rims. Then the wheels became available directly from American and we used to cut the backs. Y'all need to check this before you create a basic disaster senerio. I am not sure I would recoment machining off 1/2 in from the hub unless you are only going to use the wheels for looks. taking that much off could really weaken the wheel. bob
