Re: HP vs. brakes

  1. Stan. Thx.

I was so excited, I forgtot to adjust the bias in Vegas. The car had been previously been set up for the Calif. Motorspeedway with long straights with long braking zones. Nothing like that in Vegas!!!

I too use slotted rotors. I also bled and flushed the brakes within 24hrs of shipping the car to Vegas. I had just put in some new pads...and I had done my best not to glaze them and end the end, my error was not making some adjustments to the bias set up. I did follow the brake in suggestions. I was just overwhelmed but in hindsight, it caused me to really drive within my limits. I still saw well over 120 MPH on the front stretch....but I had to lay of way early. Hey, overall, I brought the car home in one piece with many lessons learned.

Rear pads...not sure. That was one of the lessons learned. They were in great shape, but I did not replace them prior to the event.

As an aside, today I had 1 full hour to play with the car. More time w/o interruption since the Vegas event last Feb..I gave the front bias 1 crank, then another..then one more. What a difference. Much more feel and braking power. Now I need to replace the slotted rotors. The have many small spider cracks so they are history in my mind.

I greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

    Dan

    Dan-
I may be preaching to the choir here but wanted to give you some pointers on brake efficiency. I fully realize that those rear drums, altho huge, need all the help they can get. What shoe material are you using? Check out www.praisedynobrake.com . These guys put out some fairly economical shoes with excellent material. They can also supply front pads in the same stuff.
They, as do I, advocate slotted but not drilled front rotors. Also, it's extremely important to properly break in your pads & rotors. If you don't, you'll "lunch" both in short order. Most performance brake & rotor mfgrs. have a site w/info. on proper break-in procedures and I adhere to them religiously (Brembo, Ferodo, Hawk, Performance Friction, etc.)
Also, always use FRESH fluid. Good old Ford High Performance DOT 3 brake fluid has never failed me. I buy it by the case and completely flush my brakes usually no longer than 48 hrs. b4 an event. (Takes 2 ea. 12 oz. bottles.)
Hope some of this is of interest and helps.
    Regards, Stan
