I know this is a loaded question with alot of it's but I'm looking for some general feedback. I have an original 66 Hertz red Shelby. I have had it for a number of years and it's in line for a complete concourse restoration. One of my close friends has been hounding me for some time on buying this car. I really have no intentions to sell it but I would like you guys to chime in on what you think a car like mine is worth.

Here are the specs and I will be as specific as possible. The car was repainted in 1980 (Maaco Quality). The car does have all the original sheetmetal, original and running (number matching) engine, The engine is missing the carb but other than that it has all the correct and working stuff(pan, valve covers, intake, dist etc). The body from front to rear is all original, underside pitted with rust but not terrible. . The floor pans have a little rust (soft ) under the rear seat. The car has all the stuff like correct seatbelts, tach, magnum 500 wheels, rear etc. This is a complete running and driving car. This car was an Automatic car and was changed over to a 4 speed toploader many years ago but other than that it's all there. No body panels would need to be replaced but the entire car needs disassembly and redone front to rear. What do you think it's worth , general range? Thanks for your input.Olaf

  2. Olaf,

Sounds like a $75 K deal (as is). BUT... since you are considering selling
    to a "close
Friend." I would give him the chance to buy, with a complete "Olaf /
    professional "
    restoration.

It could be a nightmare, if he buys and the car doesn't get properly
    treated. You could
lose a good friend in the transaction.

Pie ChartsOlaf, I just read Pete's response and I give his opinion a 10 times higher rating than mine. Nevertheless if I owned your car I would not sell it for $75,000. Also, I have a personal policy about situations where friends ask about buying one of my cars. Here it is: "I don't sell my cars and if I did I wouldn't sell them to my friends". Now that I've typed that and thought about it I don't know if that is an opinion of me or my friends. Good luck, Joe Bright.

  5. Olaf,

Whether you go Pete's way, or just "move" your car now, there may be another
consideration--are you gonna use the proceeds to buy another car, or are you
doing this to take cash "out of cars"? IF you're gonna buy another car,
    consider this--

a "Like Kind" exchange--collector car for collector car, in this case--can
avoid, minimize or at least defer both income and sales/use tax liabilities (of
course, given that my advice plus 50 cents will hardly buy a cup of BAD
coffee, get professional advice before taking this course). IOW, if you know what
(specific) car you want to buy with the proceeds from your Hertz car, have your
friend (or whoever's gonna end up with the Hertz) buy that "target" car and
TRADE it to you in exchange for the Hertz.

As I understand it, there's even MORE flexibility in automotive "like kind"
exchanges, now-- federal tax law has finally been changed to give us car folks
the same advantage as real estate folks've had for decades--the car you take
in trade can be located & purchased during a specified time AFTER your
"outgoing" car is sold. Requires the use of a "facilitator" (I think that's the
term), and of course you gotta jump through all their hoops, cross all the t's,
etc, but might be worth looking into, given today's prices, eh?

There was an article/column about this in Sports Car Market magazine several
    months ago.
