    Re: correct color

I'm not sure of 69's but my 67 is a redish primer on the under body. The only black I see is a little overspray from the engine compart down into the tunnel.

No, it is not the same color. In a money saving move Fomoco had the plants "save" unused paint - all the colors - left over at the endy of a day, into drums. And they used that for primer within the next few days. So, you might have gotten a car like that.
Best thing to do is look way under the tunnel, above the driveshaft, or over the rear axle to determine the color. You might be surprised.
Way back when, most of us thought black was the correct underside color, so we Kryloned away.

The pinch welds are blacked out. Maybe the guy doing it that day on your car went nuts and decided to spray bunch underneath. Have to remember cars back then were painted by hand so who knows what happened on every car.

:thumbup:Hi to all and thanks for commenting
I put the car in a rotisserie and removed every thing, the car was Z-barted it was a NY car, and I carefully removed all of it. I don’t thank the car was slop gray as I think its referred to when Ford used all the left over paint for primer. I had a MCA National judge look at it and he agreed it is black. I did not meet him I had the car in a shop to have it stripped and reprimed and that’s where he seen it. The car is home now as a roller. The paint or primer did not shine but was not flat. I don’t know but I would thank if it was done black that it would have been a paint or primer already used for something else I now about the use of slop gray and were it was used I don’t think that’s what was there but I am not positive that it could not have been slop gray. I don’t think it would help to ask SAAC either since my experience with them about these matters is if I am right they will confirm but if I’m asking they don’t know. I think red primer is more common has any body else restored a car with a black underside.
    Thanks in Advance

Take lots of photos. Sand differant places on the underside of the car and see what is under the black. Like as been posted, someone may have spray-canned it. The wildest thing I ever saw was a 70 drag pack 500 convertible that was Grabber Orange ontop with Grabber Green pans. It was a 36K mile car with original paint. Sure did make my eyes hurt looking at it. Whatever you find put it back the same way!

The correct Epoxy primer you should be using would be DP90. PPG. Yes Slop gray was very common as well as red oxide. I have a few shots of a car almost a pink color. My 69 Boss 302 is black primer. No tint of gray. Engine compartments were painted with acrylic enamel. Semi gloss. You'll find that DP90 will die back and go very flat exposed to heat. Good luck with your car

Thanks for the welcome Larry! You know I would love to pick up a shelby sometime. I have been lucky to have painted quite a few over the years. I love them all and I do know where a few are stashed. But if the trend continues with the prices I may not get the chance! I am still trying to recover from the Divorce 4 years ago!!!!! But things are getting better!

    Hi Everyone
The car has allready been stripped and primed so there is no going back. What I could see of the orginal paint was it looked like engine compartment color and flatness the car was Z bart coated from the begining or shortly after so I dont think it was ever repainted since everthing was covered in Z bart under coating.
    Thanks in Advance
