Hi All, I was just wondering... How many of us on the list are going to VIR? My wife and I haven't decided yet as we are thinking about taking a trip to the west coast around the same time. VIR is about a 9 hour drive for me; has anybody been there, is it nice? Jim
Jim, I'll be there with a few cars, and running the race in 6S151 (see attached). Never been to VIR, but, I hear it is a good venue. We'll see! There are bigger places with more "stuff" at the track, but VIR is like an overly restored original facility. The entire complex is top notch, and in the style of the old sports car people. There is an old elegant house that houses banquet facilities, along with nice classrooms for drivers schools, etc. The paddock is outdoors and only partially paved, but that gives it the old "feel". The web site is very descriptive, and very truthful of everything: http://www.virclub.com/vir/ If you want to see some of the history, there is a great web site with history that goes back to the original building of the track. There are great pictures of Shelbys and Cobras racing over the years, along with nice articles about the first feature race, which was won by Carroll Shelby: http://virhistory.com/ It is a beautiful slice of the past. The current track is pool table smooth and an absolute blast to drive. SAAC is using the North course for the open track event (I wish they were using the full course) which I think is a great track for a first timer. I think it is worth the trip. Oh, man..."I wish", but not this year; looking from the opposite side of the country, it's "too far", too many other obligations (both time & money) that gotta have higher priority. I'm envious of all of you that'll get to enjoy VIR...& just telling myself "next time" the nats are at VIR. Dave
Colin, What size wheels and tires do you have on #8? Give us some details on the car. Looks cool. Jim- I'm only 1-3/4 hrs. drive away. Greensboro is 1 hr. to the South. Raleigh is about 1-1/4 hrs. to the SE. When I die, I hope Heaven is as nice as VIR. Matter of fact, I've told my wife to scatter my ashes there...Seriously! Just got back from instructing at a 3-day BMW CCA school there. We were using the Grand East Course...A little over 4 mi. long. SAAC will be using the North Course...About 2.5 mi. long as I recall. Lots of elevation changes, lots of turns. Really keeps you thinking. I'll be one of the instructors for the Friday School using my '95 Cobra R, then Sat. will roam around looking at the Concours, parts vendors, etc. Will go back home Sat. p.m. and bring up our '66 for the Show and Shine Sunday. The facilities are superb, as Calvin alluded. To give you an idea of the size of the paddock, at this last event, we had 180 students and 90 instructors, many with large trailer rigs, etc. The paddock was only half full. Nice concession stand w/decent food, clean restrooms, great spectator spots, shade trees near the paddock. I've driven at a lot of tracks in the U.S. and, because of its different configurations, its history and its amenities, it's my favorite. Only the Nurburgring tops it...but then again...the Nurburgring is the most challenging track in the World. The only thing that I will warn you about: July will be hot as Hades at VIR. Bring cool liquids, shade and sunscreen. Hope to see a bunch of you there. Think we could schedule something of a get-together at the track just to meet & greet? Hard to do with all the activities. If I can be of assistance to anyone, make suggestions, etc., just give me a shout. Re: Re: SAAC in VIR Since a lot of us have never met, could we have a meeting point at the track where we could drop by from time to time and visit. Someone's motor home or pit area might work. Send out a detailed description and location before SAAC and we can each check in as we arrive. Lets hear some ideas folks, especially from some one with shade, refreshments and neat cars. SEE Y'ALL I am expecting that our club will have a banner set up somewhere, so look for a couple of 10x10 EZ-up tents with a banner for Southeastern Virginia Shelby American Automobile Club. I suspect that is where I will be centered much of the weekend. I also have rented a paddock garage, but I think the guys from Cobra Automotive are "renting back" the living quarters. I was lucky enough to get in early and get a room at the Lodge. This way I can stagger to my car and hop in early without having to shower.
