Ok Recently I visited the new Shelby American facility in las vegas. In doing so i met a lot of great historians and freaks like myslef. I walked through the museum and noticed something that nobody there could explain.. so I reach out to you guys.. On the 1965 Gt-350 in the showroom museum there is a lockbore for a key on the drivers side headlight grill. For what I could not tell.. has anyone else ever seen this..?
I agree with Coralsnake... some previous owner drilled that hole.. A long time ago I placed a lock in the grill opening for the alarm on mine..didn't have to alter the body by cutting or hacking on it. Now I just keep the gun loaded near the garage door!
If I'm not mistaken it is a 66 see attached, it's an odd ball on many other fronts as well, with the roll bar seat belt retractors, no dash tach. But this photo clearly shows the mysterious key hole. There was something familiar about the car so I looked into the Shelby Mustang Ultimate Portfolio by Brooklands books and found a 66 with very similar features, the roll bar the odd placement of the rear GT350 plate (touching the LeMan stripe) and even the keyhole. They say it is Carroll's personal car and it was used to compare the early GT350's with the '76 Cobra ll. In that article they too are calling it a '65. Apart from the items that I mentioned to be similar the items that are very different are; R-Model front, a deck lid fin, a 65 dash pod, after market gauges in the '66 bezel and magnesium wheels. Clearly it is the same car but obviously has gone through some sort of restoration... I guess what Shelby wants, Shelby gets. ...
I was in charge of taking car of all the museum cars when i was in vegas for my internship. It is not a 65, it is a 66. The car is claimed to be one of 12 or so (i believe) 66 Gt350s that was sent to hertz white with blue stipes. Anyway, when asked to revamp the factory tour and make it more historically accurate, i contacted the 66 registrar who said that the car was unconfirmed as to stipe color but was definitely a white hertz car. Anyway, yes, carroll shelby has owned this one for quite a long time and did all mentioned modifications. Best, Vern
