Gentleman, I have a question. There is a guy in my area who has a 1970 #s matching all correct Grabber Blue Boss 302 for sale. I just got off the phone with him and he mentioned that the car has a factory oil cooler mounted to the front radiator support. Is this specific to the low production Drag Pack cars? Because if I remember correctly I believe it is. He's calling me back in an hour with the vin, but any and all info on behalf of you guys is appreciated. Also, he's looking to get 45k for the car. Thoughts?
This question was beat to death on the Boss site. Go to it and read up on it. The jest of it, you could get a oil cooler and 3.91/4.11 gears on a Boss 302. But it wasn't called the Drag Pack option. Yes it is the same thing but no you couldn't technically get the "Drag Pack" option since it wasn't listed on the order form. 45 seems reasonable from your description.
If it has the oil cooler, make sure it is a "W" axle code car....Only the 4:30 (W) cars received the coolers, as a rule....
Thanks for the feedback fellas. What Im more interested than the logistics of the DP, is how much this car is worth given that it has this. Also, heres the vin OF02G180652. This guy wants 45k, if it in fact turns out to be a legit "DP" car, what's it worth??
I own 2 70 boss 302's and a 66 GT350H and here is my advise: Forget about the "DP" being an added value. Look for the other things that make the boss cars unique and are expensive to replace: original block and heads, carb, manifolds, shaker, tranny, rev limiter, distributor, fenders, etc. These are the things that will determine the value of the car. The oil cooler being present with the correct rear axle will not add near as much value, or be nearly as hard to replace, as these other items. Just my opinion.... thx lee
I also agree, check for correct block, rust, overall condition of the car..$45k for a clean straight car is a good buy these days..
Ya of course Im going to check all of that stuff. The guy who's selling the car said everything is correct except the carb. Also, its a Shaker hood car too.
Sound like it would be worth it to check it out.... if your looking for a Boss. Allot of things to check and they all make a big difference to the cars current value. From my experiance the original color and the shaker are more important to most buyers that the oil cooler. Also consider that "matching numbers" is a current catch phase that means many different things to different people

I had a 70 Cougar Eliminator it came with the Boss 302 (Z code) and a 4:30 Locker rear end (W code) . It had the oil cooler. I hought that if you had the 4:30 it was called the super drag pack. override
Boss 302 is a G code. The Boss 302 Drag Pack saga goes like this: Cougars and other mustangs that received the oil cooler due to having very low gears were called drag packs. Drag pack was listed on the invoices as an option. Boss 302 literature from the day never mentions drag pack as an option. Some cars got the cooler, some didn't. None of them got the words "drag pack" listed on the invoice. It is not really worth the time to debate, in my opinion, but some people on the Boss 302 registry get really worked up about it. Call it what you want. As I pointed out early in this chain, it is the other items that one needs to look at when placing a value on a Boss 302. thx lee
