Well, It's been 2 years of finding parts, rebuilding the engine, and asking you guys a lot of questions. There is always more to do but this is my pride and joy now. This car won best 68 Shelby at the Mid American meet 3x in the 1980's and won at Dearborn as well. I recently found the owner who still has the trophies. Comments welcome on detail. Always more to do!!!! A video with a little ride from 0-75 mph with a dash cam at the end. http://picasaweb.google.com/mike.herman/KRPhotoShoot#
Mike since we have talked on and off the forum in the past about getting your KR as historically correct as possible I know you will take my observations in the positive way that they are intended. First off the car looks great and I am glad you are injoying it. Pic 14 -you don't need the disc under the wing nut. Pic 15- this car deservs a better repro trunk mat then the shiny thin felt ones. Check out NPD or Virginia for their concours mats. Pic16- Jacking instructions coming unglued. Pic 22 -master , cap, attaching hardware should be semi gloss black with brake stick applied. Check out Dead Nuts On website for correct booster vac hose. The hose will need to be secured with the special silver crimp clamps. The rubber block off cap on the check valve is too long. KYB shocks drive me crazy on restored cars . Koni shocks even though incorrect would have been a better choice for a period modifaction. Gabriel adjustable striders look extremly close to factory correct adjustable shocks if they can be found. Pic 23- The AC Delco rad cap is wrong . Autolite repro available from many sources. Pic 24- wrong positive cable. The repro will be C7 marked without a cover. The battery hold down nuts are the wrong type-see AMK for correct ones. Pic- 26 wrong upper adjustable idler pulley. The bracket is zinc phosphate and the pulley is semigloss or gloss black which is pressed fitted on and not held on by a bolt . The center of the correct pulley has a cap that is zinc silver plated cap. There is a larger diameter 70 version to stay away from when looking to replace. Those are the things that stood out to me in the pictures provided . The best of luck with the car. Bob
Rod and Jerry Cookson of Quincy, Illinois owned the car in the 1980's. The family owns a funeral home in Quincy Illinois. Jerry passed away a few years ago but Rod is doing fine. I got his email and sent him pictures of the restored car and he cried on the phone. He said he was the "Rag and Polish Man" and his brother was the mechanical guy. Rod said they have all the trophies and awards in the basement in a box still along with the original smog pump.I am going to make a trip out there for he Tulsa meet next summer. Rod told me they gave a kid in St Louis $2500 for the car in a Sears parking lot. They fixed up and had it for a long time and sold it for $33k to buy a new house. I called Jim Wicks and he remembers the car well and the two brothers as well. Unfortunately Jim did not have records of the shows in the 80's so I need to see the trophies to figure out what years and what the car won. Maybe some of you guys have records of those Mid America shows and which car won which awards? Bob, that's why I use this forum, for great feedback like this!! I truly appreciate you taking the time to look at each picture! Those are all relatively easy things to fix and I will do each of them before next summer and Mid-America and SAAC. I took my 6 year old and 3 year old sons to school today in the KR. You should have seen them in the back seat with the top down. All their buddies want a ride (along with their dads). Fun times Thanks Again Bob, you have helped me tremendously with both cars. Regards, Mike
Mike: Fantastic Job! Looks flippin great!. I luv your "woohooo" shout in the video.. Enjoy! Jim #3000
Your car looks awesome, Mike! In previous threads, didn't you mention that your plan is to drive the snot out of it? You're making some great memories with your boys! Those are such great ages to make a lasting impression on them. I'm sure they sense your excitment and know how special that car is. My 4 year old son (and my 9 year old daughter for that matter) are car nuts. It's nice that you can get your boys excited about old muscle cars. Josh
Josh, The boys look forward to going to school now! I sold my wife on buying the car by convincing her it was a rolling college fund I get to drive. As for driving the snot out of it, they did not put a 428 Cobra jet in it to back up in the driveway on Sundays!
