Hi, I'm trying to decipher the date code on a 428 which came in my 67 GT500. It has some 'slag' on the first number and I can't make it out. Them it says "J29". Doesn't look like an 8, could be a 0 or 9? Any other thing to look at? What about that stamping next to it? Here's a pic, any guesses?
I believe it reads "September 2nd 1969". "J" is the 9th Month as the letter "I" is not utilized due to the fact that it can be confused with the number "1".
It does look like a "9" or a "0", but when they're obscured like that it's really hard to say and you're just left to guess. Check your intake and your heads and see if they're reasonably close to that September date and have an easier to read "year"...you'd expect the block and heads to be within a few weeks of each other if original to the car...can't say about the aluminum intake. If your car is a very early '67 there's some chance that the block's "year" is a "6" (though it doesn't really look like it) and could be original.
Jimmy, The 428 FE block uses a number (year), letter (month), number(day) sequence. For example a 6M9 stamp is December 9, 1966. You should have a number appear first before the letter. A - Jan B - Feb C - Mar D - Apr E - May F - Jun G - Jul H - Aug J - Sep K - Oct L - Nov M - Dec
Thank for the help. Where would the numbers be on the heads? Any other numbers somewhere on the block that might help? The intake is a C3AE-9425-K. The carbs are C3AF9510-BK and BJ.
The date code on the heads will be inside the valve covers when they are on...more or less between the center two valves..."above" where the casting number is between the center two plugs. I don't know where the date is on the aluminum manifolds.
