Hey there, I am taking my 68 KR on the Mustangs Across America Drive in April. 365 Cars are registered, 500 expected. The Caravan starts at Shelby in Las Vegas and ends up in Birmingham AL at the MCA national show. http://www.mustangsacrossamerica.com/ If you were driving a vintage shelby across the country what would you think the most likely parts to go would be cruising at 70 mph at 3100rpm's?? I know belts and hoses but what else would you guys bring spares for?? Mike
Hey it's a Ford, no need to take anything! Well I took my 68 Shelby to Charlotte for the Mustang 35 th. and Also drove it to the Ford 100 year and the 40th. in Tennessee. I live in Wisconsin. I took a set of hoses, also take that solenoid for the starter. It is only 15 to 20 bucks and doesn't take much space. A voltage regulator is not bad either, another small cheap part. Just make sure your front wheel bearings are greased. Double check the brakes and lines. Take some antifreeze and oil. That should get you there. I still have not decided if I am going to the 45 th. MCA made me mad with the 40th. They had us on road base gravel instead of grass. The cars were full of dust and dirt. The Concours section under the grandstand not much better. People spilled drinks from the grandstands and it dripped on the cars below. If I go I will probably take my 2007 Shelby GT instead of my 68.
Been a while since I did a road trip I would add a small container of Aluminseal, small can of Permatex aviation sealer and a foot of fuel line with clamps. Some would add a water pump and alternator if you have ones sitting on the shelf
Telephone, AAA card or Hagerty Membership, phone #s of fourm members along the rout. If you break down near Dallas, give me a call. One of those battery jumpers with air compresser. Can of fix a flat. Baling wire, duct tape, since of humor, sprite of adventure, beer. Should be good to go!! Glad to read you are driving it. Too many restored cars sitting not being driven. Larry
Did not restore the underside except for the exhaust so that I could do stuff like this. It's got posi 3:00 gears, perfect for the open road. My brother is riding shotgun, he's a mustang junkie and mechanic by trade so we should be good. I do have an extra waterpump, alternator, and I am going with Petronix so I don't have to worry about the points etc... Mike
