'66 GT-350 paint questions

Discussion in 'Shelby Mustang List' started by MikeLDrew@aol.com, Dec 17, 2005.

  1. Hi guys,

I'm in Troy, Michigan, blowing my GT-350 clone apart and preparing to send it
out to be painted. I have quite a few questions for you originality experts
    out there:

    1) What finish should the hood and trunk hardware have? I'm talking about
the hood catch, the pin that goes into the catch, hood hinges, etc. in the
front, and the trunk catch, trunk latch, and trunk spring in the rear. On my car,
most of those pieces are just painted gloss black, with the paint of course
chipped away where pieces touch. Should those be zinc-plated, or cad-plated,
    or ???

    2) My pass-through door (between interior and trunk) was evidently
originally painted body color on the trunk side, but was then painted black. Same for
the hinges. Should they be body color?

    3) For that matter, what kind of finish did the trunk have? Most '60s cars
seemed to be painted with that gray paint-splatter stuff--what about GT350s?
And what kind of trunk carpet/mat did they use? Standard Mustang?

    4) My car was originally Silver Blue (Y) with Blue w/blue interior (22). My
interior panels have been repainted black, but it's starting to look a little
shoddy. What color should be used to repaint those panels, and should the
doors and dash be painted the same color, or a different color? My trim panels
are sort of a satin/matte black while the doors are a very shiny gloss black,
and everything is going to be repainted.

I have one more non-paint question tonight--there is a drain at the bottom of
the body opening in the rain gutter for the clear '66 windows (air extractors
on standard Mustangs). My friend's car has a metal pipe about two inches
long, with a hose running through a hole that evidently dumps water into the
rocker panel where another opening lets it go to the ground. My car has just a
simple hole in the bottom of the rain gutter--no pipes, no hoses. Are those
pipes available, or do I have to jury-rig something?

I can send photos if people are unclear as to what I'm talking about.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Mike (tomorrow the motor comes out, and soon a built-to-the-hilt 331 stroker
    will replace it, Zoom Zoom!)

Mike-Am giving you info. from memory here. Let others on the List
    add/correct/modify as compelled:
hood latch on hood and hook on pedestal-Phosphate & oil
    hood pin-Zinc Chromate
    hood hinges-Phosphate & oil
    Trunk catch & latch-Cad. plate
    Trunk hinges & spring-Body color
Pass-thru door: Same as interior (black) on both sides.
    Door swing-out arm assy-Cad plated
Trunk finish-same as exterior (do not paint top of gas tank)
Trunk mat-Plaid rubber mat (not the cheap one w/fuzzy backside)
Interior panels, doors and dash-Same as interior (black).
I recommend SEM paint in spray can or bulk w/spray gun. Use on
interior metal (doors, dash, rear interior panels, etc....Even engine bay.
Let it cure for a few days b4 assy. EZ touch-up, too.
    Merry Christmas & Regards, Stan
