I don't think '66 Shelby images were "hurt" by the Hertz cars. Yes, people tended to shy away from the Hertz cars from all the stories about "what happened" to rental cars. But today, regular '66 Shelbys and Hertz Shelbys
have about the same overall value. Each has their own admirers.

As for '67's; yes they have the sexy looks but lost out in the performance
equipment from the factory as the Ford bean-counters deleted items that
was standard on the '66's. Just like the later '66's had items deleted that
was on the "early/carryover" cars. It was just the evolution of these cars.

    Re: 66 popularity

In the mid 80's I was searching for my first Shelby. I wanted a 65 or 66. At that time both of these were considerably more expensive than a 67. I settled on a 67 and still have the car. As time went on the 67's caught up to and in some cases passed the values of 66's. I know there are many theories on why but I still would love to have a carryover 66 or a Hertz. If not for my history with my car, having owned it for over 20 years, I would sell it and get a 66.

I have owned all years and the 66 is the best all around Shelby that was made period. The big blocks wow the crowds with the hoods up but when it gets to the drivability and being fun to work on the early cars win hands down. The 65 and 66s with just a few tweeks are great to drive. The reason you don`t see as many 66s for sale is because they are harder to buy, no one wants to let them go. There are a lot of big blocks for sale, everybody is tired of skinning there knuckles trying to work on them. I know I have to work on some. Big blocks are like girls with big boob jobs they sometimes look better than they may feel or ride, that was meant to be funny don`t you guys get mad at me.
