I have been told by a reliable Concours judge that my air cleaner base might not be correct. My base is not the original one, but I believe it is for a 289 Hi-po. I bought it back at the SAAC convention in Indianapolis. The problem: there are no numbers on it - no date code. AND, it seems he says there should be a hose fitting that, since my car (#0036) has the open crankcase breather, should be blocked off with a rubber cap. All I can say is maybe so. I don't recall the original one (which fell off the car back in 1971/1972) having anything like that. I have photos on one some other guy says sounds like the one the judge is describing, but it is for a 1/4" hose. I can email the to someone who could post them for me. Not at all the size for the hose from the breather to the air cleaner base. So, it's an early 289 4 spped, open crank case breather car, sold in Illinois. So, if you have an original one, go take a look , and post what you have here so I determine if what I have is correct, or go looking for the correct one. Thanks.
I believe I still have the orig air cleaner base, that came with my car #130, and it has no hole in the bottom for a tube....also no part number, that I can find...
Hi roddster! the air cleaner base for a hipo with an open type crankcase has no part number,or date code ,and no capped off bib for a closed crankcase style base.they are plain and all cars prior to jan 67 use this type. The Autolite oil filler cap is also plain.Only closed crankcase engines use the bib type..and that began after Jan 1967,our early cars were built way before that, plus your well documented as an illinois car from new. Both of these facts would point to a plain base as correct for car 0036.The hipo website may also be of some help to prove this...good luck and keep us posted.
Hi, Some comment on the HiPo air cleaner base: Have never seen any original base 65-67 without a date code stamped into it. In some cases they are kind of difficult to see as the stamping may have been a bit soft. At present I have four original HiPo air cleaners and all have a date code. 2psc have the spout for the closed emission system. 1pce has no spout at all, i.e. plain. 1pce has a small spout for a kind of vacuum line that is blocked with a rubber plug. Just my 5 cents. /Texas Swede
My '66 carryover car's air cleaner base is a tired gold color with about 2 1/2 to 3 inches of its front "massaged" to prevent interference with the Monte Carlo bar. There is a 5A stamped on the bottom. And there is the inlet for the rubber hose that goes from the oil cap ( driver side ) to the bottom of the air cleaner base. shlby66
Not sure where this came from Patty since the bib/closed systems were installed in 66 also and at least Calif (and a few other states) still required closed crankcase systems before Jan 67
I emailed the photos to the "judge" who said "that's it". But, I'm still not sold on it. Just because I don't recall mine having that back when. And, like anything else 67, there are always exceptions to this. Keep the responses coming folks, this is interesting. Swede: do you know the exact car numbers your 4 bases came from??
Hi again..Just a quick comment..You are correct Snakepit..but remember cal. has always had the toughest emmission laws, and thus had closed crankcase type setups in 66 and even used thermactors on 289 engines in 66(thankfully the K code did not untill 67,and there are very few built).roddster is asking about an out of state car,and several of the other 49 states began requirements in 67 to have closed style systems His car is not only an early build but has always been in ill.Sounds like you have always been in cal..The comments from Texas swede also reflect this,as he has a few of each type, and it is likely they are from cars with different build dates.Bottom line is Rods car should not be changed to keep the judges happy....
Hi again, All 4 of my bases are dated 5A and I don't know what number car they came off. Had a NOS complete air cleaner in a Ford Box where the base was dated 6A. Traded that base for a 5A dated. Can't believe that 67 HiPo's/Shelby's had bases that wasn't dated as I have a standard (C or A code) air cleaner that's dated 7B. A friend's HiPO 67 has an original air cleaner with a date of 7A on the base. /Texas Swede
Patty I guess the question is if Ford had two versions made by their supplier or if it was simplier/easier/cheaper to have two versions or one and simply cap off the nipple. Especially in the case of a plant that used the ones stamped with the nipple. Might be different if we were comparing cars built at San Jose for Calif delivery verse cars built at Dearborn for Ill. But we've got all these cars being built at the same plant at the about the same time. On the few orders we have add/delete sheets from San Jose I don't recall different part numbers for air cleaners (closed or open). Nor do I remember any of the parts book listing two different bases or air cleaners. Guess I should double check. Have seen a handful of the ones with the cap and spring clamp on the nipple. On an installed air clear its a detail we often don't pick up on or see without effort. "Bottom line is Rods car should not be changed to keep the judges happy...." From my understanding it has not been determined if the original base is still on the car (lack of date code and things
The original base from 6S1757 is dated 6C. I also have the 6A dated base I traded to Texas Swede for a 5A base.
