My original hubcaps have seen better days but I'm not sure what the correct color I should use in restoring them. Some appear more black in color while the others have a charcoal gray color to them??? Does anyone know the correct colors to use? Also, what is the proper valve stem length to use with the 15" X 6" steel rims with hubcaps? I would think they need to be at least 2 1/4". Has anyone restored a set of these 67 style hubcaps as any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, David
David, I repainted the hubcaps on my 68. One also looked grey, I believe it was due to oxidation. Flat black is what I used to paint them. I just finished bead blasting a 15X6 rim to use as the spare and repainted it semi-gloss black. I removed the valve stem and threw it away. I did dig it back out of the trash to measure it after reading your thread. It is 2 inches and so are all of the ones on the car. Hope this helps. Any experts on decoding the numbers on a ford steel rim out there? Ranger Jerry
No real expert but what did you find? Normally you will find the FoMoCo and the maker of the wheel (such as Kelsey Hayes or others) and a date
snakepit, on the rim right of the valve stem is a small 8 and a little larger 6, on the right side of the valve stem is 5 then a 6. In the center in between the stud holes is a 6, a C, a K2 over 8 and a FoMoCo oval. Inside the rim is KELSEY CANADA AL 15X6 JJ 6-5 NH and K2 over 8 thanks for your input Ranger Jerry
If they have any corrosion, I used Jenolite jelly to cure before painting. Its also removed all pitting, etc. After that I primed with jenoseel (both products are available from the same company). Dont think you are allowed to add links in forums? But a google search of 'jenolite' should do the trick! Its easy to find online anyway. Jenolite has been incorporated into the RustSolutions web site now so its got better management if you ask me. Delivery is also quick, and the last advantage is that last time I looked Jenolite Jelly was half price! They do deliver worldwide, but they may be suppliers in the states??? Hope it goes well!
Hi David, I have three of the '67 wheel covers NOS in the boxes (They're actually a Thunderbird cover with a Shelby center insert). Although new, one is painted a distinctly different shade of charcoal from the others. So it apparently didn't matter much to Ford, so a nice medium charcoal shade should be OK. Bill
You might get a better response to this over 5 year old thread if you send the original poster an email or PMas the last time he was actually logged in to the forum was January 31st, 2008 11:26 AM
