Does anyone know if there are two different lower grilles for a 67 Shelby? I know the mesh is different on the outboard than the inboard. My car has an outboard grille with the finer mesh but the lower grille more closely matches the inboard coarser mesh style. To make things more complicated, I have since encountered an original appearing car with an outboard grille with the similar mesh to the inboard style (coarse mesh). Can anyone shed some light on what variations there may be? I know 67's had many running changes in production.
The variations that I know of (have seen): 1. Early model one peice top and bottom. This is all one piece, no "top", no bottom. they are all together. And this grill is angled. 2. Slightly later. Angled like the early cars, but two separate peices. Separate top, and bottom. 3. Flush fit inboard. A lot like the AMT 67 Shelby model. Two pieces. The top section sits straight up and down, and, is about even with the highbeams. 4. Outboard. Installed on mostly the last third of production, but, due to the "laws", there have been some earlier applications of this grill into the sales mix.
#02751 has outboard lights, and the upper grill is as you described. But I don't have a lower grill. Should this car have a lower grill, and if so, what should it be like? I have only ever seen (in parts catalogs) a lower grill to match with the Inboard style of upper grill. Thanks for any info.
I have a friend with a very late....(Non K code mustang)...67 Shelby...with outboard lights, and no lower grill...
Howdy! couldn't resist adding my comments. The 67 running changes are the most of any year shelby. The basic changes in assembly really helped speed up the process and when the orders for cars began to pour in they needed to streamline all steps of the transformation, the grilles were really one of the easiest things to change, they are a cosmetic part. Most mesh is 1/4" x 1 1/2' slotted with the pattern seperated by thin 3/32" and thicker 6/32" divider bars..Early cars with the one piece grille are usually also made with a completely different mesh.I would not be at all surprised if cars had a mixture between upper and lower types-they were much more concerned with high beam location and getting the cars to the dealerships.Your concern now is looks? or originality?I would look for other clues, like the way they are fastened, compared to other cars, and if it is looks you desire, common sense would say they should match each other..now if we wanted to complicate things we would be talking about how headlamps are mounted,or how many different types of horns were used with the different grilles..or the way license plate supports are different.please let us know what happens, and if you can ,give measurements of both your grilles-maybe somebody can help you find a match.
There are several types of grills used in 67 The inboard light grills are the larger mesh and if the car recieved the lower grill would get the large mesh lower grill. The outboard light grills are the smaller mesh and thus if recieved the lower grill got the smaller mesh grill ( small mesh lower grills are currently not being reproduced) at least the last time I inquired. A fair # of 67 cars did not recieve the lower grill. Dominic
