Autoweek has counted down their top 20 Sebring races. The 1955 Sebring made the list at number 4, with Carroll Shelby and Phil Hill taking 2nd place in a Ferrari 750S.

No. 4: Just two cars led Sebring in 1955. The fourth running of the great race was all about the Jaguar D-type owned by Briggs Cunningham and driven by Mike Hawthorn and Phil Walters and the Ferrari 750S shared by Phil Hill and Carroll Shelby.

The Jaguar had led by two laps until the closing stages, when oil-pump problems resulted in a series of quick pit stops. That allowed Shelby, driving with his arm in a cast because of a prior crash, to close in on the ailing leader. Timing and scoring suggested that he ended up ahead of the Jag at the finish, and race officials even brought the Ferrari into victory lane.

But timing and scoring had made an error, and the result was changed in favor of the Jaguar, the winning margin given first as 10 seconds. A protest was lodged, but officials upheld Hawthorn and Walters's win, with the margin revised later to 24.5 seconds.
