Hello! My name is matt. I'm 22 and live here in az. The reason I'm a new member is that my dad has a 69 Shelby GT500 that I am possibly going to satrt restoring. The car has a long history with him and my sister, his 1st marriage, etc. So the car has priceless sentimental value. I am trying to learn more about it, because if I restore it (long story) I want to do it correctly. From time to time, I will probably ask silly questions, but point me in the right direction and I will forever be in debt to you! As it sits, it has a 390BB in it. The original motor is still in our possesion, the water froze one winter and the block cracked along the top of the block. Its in very sad shape as of now... The "not a honda" tag was addes since I am young and do drive/tune hondas and acuras. I posted pics on my forum, but did that to avoid thievery just in case. My dad took off the original PS, exhaust and intake manifolds in the pursuit of more HP. Then, his landlord threw them away. Dammit... Then, as the car sat thru the years, someone decided it necessary to steal the ram air cleaner setup off it. Again, dammit! So I need to figure out what dats/codes I would be looking for in finding orginals, first off. Thanks!!! -Matt
Even in Arizona, you need to protect the engine block with antifreeze. Car looks solid and should be a good restoration project. Keep us posted on the progress. robin
There are 2great websites you'll want to become familar with, this is one of them. The other, known as "the VMF" www.vintage-mustang.com You have a nice start there. Rear window slats etc.
I would start with saying you came to the right place...Now get them tools off of those Fenders!! toss the Hubcaps like frisbees!! the last thing you want to do is turn a Car like this into a storage bin or parts rack. I understand it happens and al that. But now is the time to really address the cars needs. and from what I see they are first on the list! we'll be here for you through the process and welcome aboard!
Car has been a tool shelf for years...and even a ladder to change the lights in our carport there!! I hope to begin getting her together soon. I am in the process of gettting rid of some of my current projects and cash makers... Don't hate, but I am also an avid honda/acura fan. I AM NOT a fart can, shopping cart wing fan though. It is amazing the engineering behind their motors, and with minimal dollars the ways these cars can make raw power... But as my dad says, once I drive something like his shelby, I will probably have my mind changed
I am not a hater. I think Honda is a heck of a Car company with great products. you will need to keep one as a daily driver. the Shelby would be costly to run every day. I sent you a PM.
If I may offer some advice on restoring a car as I have done on myself. Get a bunch of ziplock baggies and put every nut and bolt in these baggies and be sure to mark exactly where they go. Trust me on this one, if you don't you will be fighting the car when you go to put it back together.
Not tearing into it anytime soon, but I did learn the importance of baggin and tagging everything on my 1st car. 1966 chevy impala 2dr HT.....after almost 10 yrs, it still sits in pieces...
