Shelby club exec dies in wreck

12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 9, 2006

John Thomas, a decades-long Mustang enthusiast, original member of the North Texas Mustang Club and charter member of the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas, was killed in a three-car accident last Saturday near Pearsall in South Texas.

Mr. Thomas, 56, of Irving, was driving a Saturn on U.S. Highway 57 when the car was struck by a Mercury Cougar that police said veered into his lane. A Neon then hit the wreckage, according to news reports.

Mr. Thomas died at the scene, and two people in the Neon were also killed.

Over the years, Mr. Thomas owned a wide array of hot Fords, friends said, including some vintage Mustangs. At the time of his death, Mr. Thomas was vice president of the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas.

"He was always helping other members who had questions about their Mustang or Shelby, and he was never shy about working on anything that had a Ford logo," said Russell Kintz, secretary of the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas.

"Johnny believed in driving his rare cars, whether on the track at speed or to our monthly club meetings. As with the North Texas Mustang Club, Johnny was part of our family and will be greatly missed."
