Ok... I got the skinnny on these puppies thanks to Howard!!! The R Model valve covers come from 64 1/2 mustangs valve covers with the exception of welding the tubes and fins in the correct location. The covers that I have are 65 Mustangs because of the raised circles. There was nothing special about the R model (Cobra Comp) valve covers beside using what was already available from Ford and modifying them. What I also learned was that not ALL R models had the R model covers. They were options back then so this meant that some R models would have the traditional Cobra T pans, regular mustang seats, or Open Letter Cobra valve covers etc etc.... What this also means is that my dream of having a piece of real "R" model just went up in smoke! hahaha Oh well...back to happy hunting and thanks for reading and helping. jon ----- Forwarded message from jonlee@wt.net ----- Date: Sun, 24 Jul 2005 00:17:49 -0500 From: jonlee@wt.net Reply-To: jonlee@wt.net Subject: 65 Shelby Stuff To: Shelby List <shelbymustang@carmemories.com> Take a look at this. THis set is mounted backwards too but the steel stamping where the top of the cover curves to the lip look different from the pictures I have seen and mine. Hum. Interesting. On some pictures I saw of R models, there seems to be a different variance on tube setting. The traditional ones were long tube on both sides as Lee Mathias stated to me but then Im wondering if there are more than one setup. I have seen some pictures where the tube maybe long on passenger side and then no long tube on the driver side that I could see from pictures. Anyone want to explain? Also, how do you tell originals from fake valve covers or can you? Sorry to bug ya'll on this 65 stuff. I just find this very fascinating. jon Quoting jonlee@wt.net: - Hey : - - - Does anyone know the story behind these valve covers or share with us what they know? They are so ugly I can't even imagine how to "bling" them to life(ha ha ). They were on the car when I got it - along with the originals. - - I looked closely at them and they look like they were made to be interchangeable on either side of the motor. Was this a common item for hot rodders back then? - - - jon - - ----- End forwarded message ----- ----- End forwarded message -----
