Many of you may know that the movie Grand Prix from 1966 has recently come out in DVD. We have seen old movies before in DVD, and we all know that a '66 Hertz GT350 was used in the movie. But the DVD has some added footage and added features. Much of it is of interest to Shelby owners. I had heard that Bob Bondurant instructed James Gardner in his driving in the movie. I didn't think anything of it, but all these years I should have realized that this was before Bondurant had is school in operation. So Bob used The Carroll Shelby School of High Performance Driving was used to instruct Gardner. He was trained in a GT350 and there is footage in the extra features on the DVD. There are some great racing features in the movie to a person interested in racing history, and a part of it has connections to Shelby. It is well worth either renting for watching of adding a copy to your collection. This is considered by most experts to be one of the two greatest movies about racing of all time (along with Steve Mcqueen's Le Mans) and it has just become available in DVD.
Your timing is right on. It was on TV the other night and I caught only a few small segments but it was enough to pique my interest again so I pulled out my 'taped from TV 25 years ago' VHS tape and watched the whole thing. As I recall, it was brutal taping it. It was aired for about 2 or 3 nights in a row at 11pm to 1am or so and I stopped the tape for every commercial, then restarted it when the movie started again. Yes, I plan to get the DVD
Right now all of the details are comming up blank to me, but the Hertz used in the movie was at a couple of SAAC conventions I have been to. One of the very early GT40's was used as a moving camera car in many of the races and scenes, and from what was said in the the "Making of", Carroll Shelby had much to do with the production of the film. In fact he was presented as "saving" the film from disaster by working with the technical and logistics people. I knew he had been somehow involved, but I didn't realize he was as involved as they presented in the extras to the movie. The DVD is a must have. I had only rented it from Netflix, but I will be owning it ASAP.
I saw the car to at the Saac convention it had a Cobra snake on the 1/4 panel i think it was green or gold at the time Buddy Bezel owned it and brought it back to the U.S. Mike
