Hi all. I have a question to toss out there. When I bought my car #3014 in 1990, there was no lower front grille. The car had been rough, but showed no signs of damage in the front bad enough to have reached the grille (still has the original nose). The upper is still the original. At the time, I installed a repro lower grille which, of course, is not the right mesh for an outboard car. Since then, I have been informed that some late cars came without a lower grille. Any known original examples out there to back this up? Thanks. Al
The outboard cars were supposed to come with lower grills. Shelby even designed the grill with smaller mesh compared to the earlier inboard grills so it would be harder for rocks to get to the rad and cause damage.Without a grill it is a open target. I don't know why you would not want the protection? A guy in Topeka repros the correct mesh lower grill. No lower grill on a 67 Shelby is not only points deduction in concours competition but risking rad damage on a street driven car. Bob Gaines SAAC 67 Shelby head concours judge
Thanks Bob. Any info on that source in Topeka? I collected a bird in that lower grille last year when it was in (the incorrect mesh). Bent the grille and saved the radiator. Al
tandjwilliams is the ebay name. I think it is Rand Williams. Tell him I recomended him. Maybe you can get him to run some more lower grills .I need another one as well. Bob
FWIW, when bought in 1977, 03040 also had no lower grille. No front end body damage either, though the right side suspension was trashed. Can't say if there had ever been one in the car. An original lower grille was installed a few years later.
