Hello fellow members. I am working on a customer's 1967 GT500 428 dual quad with the dual point distributor. I am trying to fugure out an ignition breakdown during acceleration. It has a fresh set of plugs and wires. Points look new and I cleaned them off. Cap and rotor look new as well. I had never adjusted points so I got on youtube and got a lesson. According to the owner's manual it is supposed to have 22-24 total dwell. It doesn't indicate what the primary point should be initially set at. I have tried all sorts of different configurations varying from 22-32 total dwell. I can't seem to get it right. I currently have the primary set at 16 deg. and total dwell at 24. It seems to be worse as now I can feel a slight misfire by simply revving it. I am obviously doing something wrong. Can somebody enlighten me as to how to proceed?
Not sure what you mean by primary dwell. Are you talking about timing? Dwell is the duration or degrees the points remain open. Start with an initial point gap of .017 and check dwell from there. One lead of the dwell meter is rounded the other goes to negative side of coil.
Not sure what it is called. From what I have read. You are supposed to set the dwell on the point that opens first. Once that one is set you go the other and that will give you total dwell. I also read that the gap is just used as to get the engine to start, once that is done it is fine tuned with dwell.
I followed your advice and gapped it at .17. The car runs a lot smoother now. So how do I go about adjusting the dwell now?, I took it out for a run and it feels sluggish and really won't develop past 4k rpm. I get some random backfire at different rpm ranges. What should I look for?
