When I was in high school I owned a 1970 Cobra Torino, at the time I had a local Ford racing guy in Doylestown Pa. doing the engine tuning. In his shop he had a 1967 Cougar with a 427 FE , the car was a Gurney special and was very rare. Since then I have never seen another, has anyone ever come across one of these ? Tout
It was strictly a dress-up kit and had nothing to do with the FE or ANY performance options. I could have even been dealer-installed....nothin' but hubcaps, chrome and a decal. "...The ´67 Dan Gurney Special was a tribute to Mercury’s own Dan Gurney, an SCCA Trans-Am racer who took the Cougar through the esses and apexes on road courses all over North America. Although Gurney didn’t set the world on fire with those SCCA B-Production Cougars, his legacy will always be tied to Mercury’s top cat. The Dan Gurney Special gets the nod for uniqueness because it was a very limited-production car available only in 1967-´68. Jim Pinkerton of Seattle, Washington, a recognized and respected Cougar historian, tells Mustang & Fords the Dan Gurney Special was little more than a dress-up package with quarter-window decals, chrome valve covers and air cleaner lid, and turbine-style wheel covers. Little is known about how many were produced, how many were factory units, and how many were dealer installed. The Dan Gurney Special was available in all Cougar colors with both the 289/302 and 390ci V-8s. Suffice it to say, the Dan Gurney Special was available in all Cougar configurations." Specially equipped with: Turbine wheel covers F70 x 14 wide-oval nylon cord whitewall tires Chromed engine dress-up kit: Chrome air cleaner lid Chrome valve covers Chrome Oil Dipstick Chrome Radiator cap Dan Gurney signature decal Cougar 289 cu. in. This car had a 427FE in it, was that an option at that time? I know that Shelby had rumors of a few 427 cars in 67 , but I thought that they were dealer installed. Was 68 the first year for the 428 /428CJ? At that same time a friend of mine , Jay Bittle had his 1967 Shelby in the same shop, Jay's now on the west coast doing well, still owns the 67. Tout
Tout, The guy I bought My First GT500 from Has a 427 Cougar Convertible in Maryland. I cannot recall the actual term for these 427 Cougars but there is one and yes it was an option.
The only Cougar that ever had a 427 factory installed was the 1968 GT-E. They came in standard hardtop or XR-7 hardtop.Early cars had the w code 390 HP 427 and the later cars had the 428 Cobra Jet. There were no convertibles produced with a 427. Here is a picture of my 1967 GT 500. It is the lowest mile 67 GT 500 in the registry with 4500 miles. It has a 427 tunnel port in it.
