Help--need recommendations for brake pads & shoes

Discussion in 'Shelby Mustang List' started by DLen1261@aol.com, Feb 16, 2006.

  1. I'm replacing the brakes on my 65 GT350 & need recommendations for "locally
available" brands (& their individual product lines/friction materials) of pads
    & shoes.

The car sees limited street and (at novice group or slower speeds) "track
day" use; my primary concern for the immediate future is safety (especially
    safety & dependability on-track), not NOS/concours stuff.

Anything decent available from the "auto parts" chains? NAPA?

    thanks in advance,
    Dave

    Dave,
Not a locally available brand, but you can order great pads from Portefield. They will make pads in any compound you want - I think I use the "R4S" compound in my 65/66 cars and it works great.

    Good luck,

    Dave-
Even tho you're not going to "push the envelope" so to speak, I heartily recommend that, if you're going to do any track time at all, you need all the braking efficiency you can get. Check out a company by the name of Praisedyno at www.praisedyno.com. They have the correct size pads and shoes(you may need to contact them directly for the right p/ns). I don't think you're gonna be satisfied with street stuff and, considering the labor involved, it's worth putting on the up-graded material.
    Regards, Stan

  5. Do they produce alot of brake dust? I like my rims to stay clean - you know bling bling. The ones I have on now make a ton of brake dust for mine.

I do many track days with many different cars. I have tried lots of brake
pads. Given what you are asking, I would probably go with the Performance
Friction Carbon Metalics. Autozone used to have these with a lifetime
warranty, that they stood behind well. You bought them once and they
replaced them whenever they ran out. I put 3-4 sets of pads on one of my
cars. They also had the Z-rated pad. I would probably suffest the standard
Carbon pad. If you decide they are a little weak for your track duty, get
the Z-rated pads. The Z-rated ones produce a little more brake dust.

If these don't work out, I might suggest the Hawk HPS pads, but you
usually have to get them mail order. Tirerack.com is usually the best
    place to get these.

Not a ton of dust (no more than OE), but, if you use them on the track I
have never seen a pad that doesn't make a mess. I'd rather clean brake dust
    than repair sheetmetal ;)

Everytime I go out, I have to take a towel and wipe off the brake dust build up.

If you have to wipe your wheels after street driving, you DEFINITELY have
the wrong pads! If you aren't racing, I know SSBS and others make "low dust"
pads that may work better for you also.

Or maybe you just care too much about the Bling? LOL

  12. I am running the SSBC pads and they have seemed to work well. for me it is
the street and a bit of autocross. of course they way I drive on the street is
    not too far from autocross.

I have been wondering about the ceramic pads. what do you guys think>

also I thought I had heard of something that you spray on your wheels to
keep the brake dust from sticking. anybody heard anything or is it just more BS

I use Macguiars Spray Wax. Before each track event I spray the stuff on
and apply it like normal wax. I can take and air hose and blow 99% of the
brake dust away (and some of my brake pads generate very heavy brake dust)
the remaining 1% will wipe away with a cleaning cloth. It also makes the
    wheels look pretty good.

I too use the SSBC pads and the brake dust doesn't seem to be too bad.
